I got a cheap plasma cutter from Chairman Mao's Big Rock Candy Mountain (Amazon Prime Day Sale).The torch and accessories all feel to be higher quality than the price point would suggest.All except the work clamp and wire.At least the clamp isn't one of those Dollar Tree jumper cable jobs.Someone looked at a decent clamp and then copied it out of the thinnest metal they could get by with.I could just swap out the clamp and I suspect it would be fine.However I just got a 25 foot roll of welding cable at an auction recently.I am thinking about buying a halfway decent clamp and using the wire I have to beef it up.I may reuse the dinse connector it came with or just buy another one on Amazon.This brings us to clamps.I assume the cheap magnetic ones don't work well?This one looked interesting.I like how it doesn't ground through the magnets, they just hold the contact down.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BWZTBCC...v_ov_lig_dp_itI have one of the round ones that has a spring loaded brass contact in the middle.It came with some arrowhead magnets.I have not read much good about those onlineIt is like this one but without the handle.I could make a handle if it really needed one.https://smile.amazon.com/Hobart-7705...s%2C581&sr=8-1I have arthritis and muscle weakness in my hands (among other places) so a really sturdy spring clamp is out.I have been leaning towards somthing like this:https://www.ebay.com/itm/39427117595...424.m570.l5997Any thoughts?Am I overthinking this and should I just use the stock clamp and cable?Are you not supposed to use magnets with plasma cutters?Anyone have experince with those G clamps?Thanks again.
Reply:Since your arthritis rules out any stronger spring clamp, out of the choices you listed the last one from  ebay would work. A little awkward and time consuming but do what you gotta do. On my under 80 amp plasma cutters as well as voltage sensing cables for wire feeders I always upgrade to 6 gauge wire as it doesn’t kink which makes it much more manageable. Reply:Magnets and electric arcs get along too well, which can cause a lot of problems when welding or plasma cutting. I tend to steer clear of magnetic anything unless I can turn it off when it's not in use or there's no other choice. Magnetic clamps can't be used on non-ferrous materials either which, in my opinion at least, limits the usefulness on a plasma cutter. They do work as advertised but the ones that are "always on" can be a a mother to get off your part if they're decent quality. If ease of use is important they sell ones that you can turn on/off with a toggle: https://www.mcmaster.com/7992A11/You don't need some monster capacity work clamp for a plasma cutter either unless you're going to run it for hours on end and you're worried about overheating it. For a plasma that never see's more than like 50 amps (which is probably most of them) you can get away with a pretty flimsy work clamp and never have a problem. We use these clamps as welding clamps (with a proper gauge of wire) up to like 100 amps and they get warm but never catch fire or anything: https://www.amazon.com/3201-1-Inch-S.../dp/B0006NC1L2 . If you can operate the one that came with the machine I'd just stick with that. Make a few cuts and see if the clamp is getting hot, if it is then think about getting a c-clamp or no-twist c-clamp style like that ebay one. It probably wouldn't matter for a plasma, but running welding current through a tiny little point like that seems pretty stupid. It is sold by the Liu Dongxing company though so what do you expect.

Be careful though.  The one taboo issue would be to spend more on your ground clamp than your plasma cutter.  That’s just wouldn’t be right.

Reply:I wouldn't worry about it. Don't ask me how it's possible, but in my welding class at the community college, I watched the instructor cut a piece of steel without even having the ground clamp attached. Try that with a welder!
Reply:I've a cheap Herocut plasma 40amp in my shop now. I think the guy originally bought it for less then $100 a couple of years ago. Chinsy original clamp works perfectly fine. We have a cheap Eastwood plasma table, I just put the clamp on the table leg and leave it there. We cut stainless steel with it, i've cut some 1/2" stainless with this setup and had no issue. Mostly just cut under 1/4".I would not worry about the crappy ground clamp. I fully expect I will catch this POS on fire before I have a problem with the clamp.Airco Auto-Pak 130Forney 235AC/DC

Reply:I thought the same thing about my cheapy Cut50 when I got it... poor quality work clamp/cable. I was going to change them out, but decided to leave it as a temperature sensing device .... if it gets hot, it's time to stop for a beer before you let the magic smoke out of the plasma. So far I've managed to cut some 36" strips of 5/16" high carbon steel, and never needed to give it a rest. Try it as it comes out of the box... you might find it's all you need. I use a 600 amp one similar to that one from Lenco and I weld 400 to 450 amps all day long with it. Ive only detroyed one in 30 years and it was an old one I found in a junkpile and I used it for 12 years brfore it fell apart at the theaded connection.Ive burned up the magnetic ones in a day or 2...they dont work for me as hot and as long as I run at a time....for what you do they might work but they never impressed me much Have fun and be safePopeyeLast edited by old miner called Pop; 13 Hours Ago at 02:41 PM.
Reply:The good thing is that the cable doesn't need to carry large amounts of current.  A 6awg cable suffices for about 10-15ft or so up to 70A or so, if the duty cycle isn't 100%.  Voltage drop is always a concern to me, but as long as the contact is decent it should be fine.   An oversized clamp that is cheap, and not too stiff but stiff enough is the Lincoln $7 clamp that most Home Depot's seem to carry.  Rate for 300A and has lots of beefy copper.  My local HD doesn't stock it, and if yours doesn't you can likely still order it online for delivery to store.  Next in line for value is the brass 400A Berger Clamp from Harbor Freight for $17 or so.  I bought a few when they were still $13.  Shame they went up in price so fast.  If you want to eliminate the spring pressure altogether, you can look for C-clamp style brass clamps that start at around $25 or so.  There's other versions that are jaw-like and use a threaded rod to provide the clamping pressure.  Seen them for around $35 or so.Last edited by Oscar; 9 Hours Ago at 06:00 PM.

I even use it as a clamp to hold material for welding.
