I had to gouge out some fillet welds yesterday and used a 3M Cubitron hard disc and various coarse grit flap wheels to clean up the area. But that was much slower than I'd like. I saw a YouTube where a guy compared a Norton Blaze with backing plate to a hard disc and the difference in heat and speed was significant.I'd like to try them but they're only sold in packs of 25 for big money. The flap discs are sold individually but I'm not sure I'd get the same result. Any ideas on what discs to speed up the process? 24 grit anything is hard to find, I've got 36 grit already.
Reply:The 3M Cubitron is top tier, I don't think the Norton Blaze abrasives are significantly different. They haven't seemed substantially different to me the few times I've tried them. Never done a proper scientific test or used them for very long though.I'd personally use a good quality double cut carbide burr to remove the bulk of the weld and then if I needed to clean up all the rough surface I'd make a pass with a grinding wheel/flap disc or flap-wheel mounted to a straight die grinder to smooth it. Depending on the size and length of the fillet a thicker cut-off wheel could work for bulk removal as well.

Reply:I tend to be of the same opinion on the bur. Tiny nasty little shavings that get everywhere and in your skin. I might try it outside though but a bur is a little harder to control for that application than some kind of disc.Wolfram, good idea on a thicker cutoff wheel. That would have worked to knock the worst off. Wish I'd thought of it. I don't do this daily and thought maybe one of you all might have developed a technique or found a genius product that rips down welds and/or gouging debris nearly instantly. We all hate grinding and the quicker its over with the better.

Reply:Oh yes it is fun
Very satisfying to melt that weld away without having to cut or grind it off. Messy though.

Reply:I use these for most everything. I got them for mill scale, but at 36 grit they will remove some metal too. I LOVE these things. https://weldmongerstore.com/products...e-wheel-15l843Miller Multimatic 255
