I have a John Deere 350B with a mostly wore out undercarriage. I dont put many hours a year (50-150) on it and cant justify the bucks to replace the bottom right now. I thought I might give building up the components a try. Any tips on building up the rails aka chains and the track rollers and idlers? I plan to use stick and my SA200.Do you machine it post weld or just try to get it reasonably smooth and let it wear in?
Reply:I have done a couple. Both were with a mig, .045 wire and co2. Its fun at first, but gets boring.....I never built up a set of chains. I have cut the sprockets off a cat D6 and welded new ones on.I did the rolls in a cut down 55 gal barrel with some water in it. Weld a little, roll it in the water. The rolls don't have to be taken apart. Just make sure they are full of grease when done. After a while you will be able to lay it down pretty flat.I did the idlers right on the machine. I tacked a couple of tabs on the side for the ground.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I work for a deere construction dealer and would recomend not welding the lower rollersas they have seals and are oil filled are the chains sealed or dry bushings another option is used or aftermarket parts hope this helps hypertherm powermax 900 : miller 30a spoolgun ranger 305g lincoln ln-25more tools than a tool truck

o you need to re-establish base material, or apply a wear resistant lining ? I assume both and this can be done, however some parts, eg: rollers, need total strip down, welding, machining and reassembly.Building up chains used for load is not recommended, however in a wear application, again possible provided done correctly.Rebuilding and hardfacing track pads is very time consuming, however rebuilding and hardfacing wear parts is cost effective, and if done correctly may outlast new replacement equipment. needless to say, this work is in the realm of professionals and must be performed correctly to ensure servicability and avoid failure / cause injury. If you provide base material details for all the parts, I may be able to provide some welding guidelines.

Reply:I believe the JD has greasable rollers. Just watch the seals. One thing, that you can't build up very well are the pins and bushings. Those must be turned or replaced. Poor condition of these is one of the major causes of wear to the rest of the undercarriage. The cleats, the idlers and even the sprockets may be built up, but be sure the sprockets aren't left with a point on the end. I have built up these parts with hardfacing rods, and nickel based rods, but nothing beats a new pair of shoes for the tired feet.Berco may actually have reasonable priced replacements for the undercarriage where things aren't fixable. Reply:Be glad it ain't a Komatsu 575, worlds largest dozer. To replace the undercarriage, it's $250,000.At our local Komatsu dealer, they have an automatic welding setup to reweld undercarriage componenta. Submerged arc, the works. Pretty neat operation.Good Luck with your rebuild.
Reply:Hey Rookie welder, Nice deer that you and you boy got! You will have to give me call and give me more details! A friend of mine got a real nice buck with a big rack tonight! I could not see if it was a Mule or a White Tail, as it was along the side of the road. The only problem was that he got it with his Mazda pickup! Probably totaled it out!
