I'm joining the electricians union here in Los Angeles soon. I want to get an L.A. city certification to go along with my job. More skills mean more money right? How tough is it? Where did you go to school? I'm eager and curious to know.
Reply:The stick welding test is just a regular 1" plate test, a vertical, a horizontal and an overhead. They let you put the first pass in with 1/8" rod, everything after that has to be done with 5/32".For the written test you need the appropriate code book, you have to answer the question correctly but you also have to say exactly where in the codebook the answer is found for it to be right. When I went the tester said the failure rate was around 75% (? I'm trying to remember, it was very high) on the first try. There were quite a few people taking it for the second and third time when I was there, and a lot of them failed. Less than half of my group passed it, some guys failed for the 3rd time. Part of the test is closed book.I didn't go to school, JTMcC.
Reply:What's the reason that they require 5/32 rods? Very few of the jobs I've been on een have them. Perhaps this certification is merely for structural work, and doesn't really apply for pipe work.
Reply:So did you pass it already? I dont' think you said. I actually found a schol near me, in west covina called Tri Community College. They are a schoola\ and a testing facility for the practical part of the test(the actual welding). When I spoke to a gentleman over there by the name of Carlos he said that I should enroll and focus on the welding. There, I will be practicing and taking the test. Once I pass it, I will enroll in another class to learn the written portion of the test. I'm working on my AA right now and will be for another semester at pasadena city college but ine june of 2009, i will be trading my biology book for a D 1.1. I'll get it. I hope.
Reply:I passed it several years ago. To be a lot more specific, the test I described is the D1.1/D1.5 Structural, manual test. The Structural semi-automatic test is 232 wire. Then they give a light gage test that's cellulose rods downhill on sheetmetal, then they have an aluminum test. They may have other categories but that's all I recall. All I went for was the Structural, manual. You can add on semi-automatic at a later date by only taking the practical test, you don't have to retake the written. The written was quite a bit harder than a lot of the guys anticipated.JTMcC.
