Need To Cut Thick Steel

I've never welded before, but I suddenly have a need to. My grandfather has these two semi trailers he wants gone so I'm going to cut them up and take the steel to the scrap yard. I've been looking around online for what the best type of fuel and equipment would be, but I thought asking a real welder was better than blindly roaming websites. Some parts of the frame are around 5 inches thick or so. The walls and roofs are thin aluminum with wood on the inside, but I already removed the wood. Also, I was planning on taking welding courses this summer so I could learn how to weld things for my car ( roll cage intercooler piping, exhaust, etc...) I was then going to buy a welding setup suitable for these tasks. If you guys could reccomend some equipment and a fuel that would be good for both I would really appreciate it. If you guys have some specific brands or kits to reccomend that would also be useful. I'm trying not to spend more than like $400 bucks, but I can stretch if I have to. Thanks.

Reply:sounds like you're trying to keep costs down so you're probably better off going with oxy/acetylene and a good cutting and welding torch. If you go to plasma it's going to cost no less than 600, probably more for a unit that would cut over 1/2 inch material. Multipurpose units cost over 1000 to start and then cutting over 1/2 inch isn't that easy.oxy/acetylene is a great tool; oxy/propane is used for high volume cutting since it's cheaper fuel but overal acetylene is better. If you have lots to cut you might be better off leasing large tanks to start and keep looking for a deal on owner bottles since they are costly as well. Reply:I have demo'ed these trailers before.Get Oxy/Acey and a good angle grinder.Grind the rivets off from the outside and take the exterior aluminum off in complete pieces.Do the roof first, then the sides.Then remove all the wood starting high and working your way down. Once ALL the wood is gone start cutting with the torch. With two helpers I have Demo'ed three of these in one day.Get a sawsall and cut the tires off the rims.Cut the axles into small pieces so you can move them. Throw it all in a big truck and head for the scrap yard.Bob
Reply:Well if you have never used a torch before and do not have any welding skills and need it gone right away contact a welder that can do it for you. There are safety issues using any torch and if you have never used one I certainly wouldn't recommend you tackle this on your own. Offer them part of the scrap profits or any of the metal they might want. Reply:Get a gas powered chop saw i use it alot on thick material blades are cheap. Also i would hire it out myself i have done tear downs of old tractors and we had access to a salvage torch. will go through like 6inches of steel we used propane cause you can run it longer also. We had several hundred gallon tanks that they ran off of
