I realize that horseplay and all that stuff is bad. Prolly about 99% of us have engaged in it by playing tricks with coworkers by messing with eachothers machines. I thought it would not only be funny, but educational for people new in the field to hear the stories and maybe learn a thing or two about troubleshooting a machine. I will tell the first one. Then im goin to bed! There was a guy who used to love playing with peoples machines at break. Then he played with mine! I really cant remember what he did to mine, but in return i took the difuser off his mig gun and brazed the holes in it shut and sanded them out real nice. made it look almost brand new. He got could not figure it out. It was a kodak moment.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld

Reply:yeah switching polarities is always good. there was this guy who used to go thru ppls tools at break and take stuff from them and i got wind he was in my toolbox when i left early for a dentist appointment so i took a can of clearcoat spray and sprayed his wire down with a good coat. the drive rollers im sure got some of it but he couldnt figure out where all the porosity was coming from haha he was switching bottles out thinking it was the gas. i called it my SPRAY transfer trick.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld

You get a guy who thinks he is a real bad *** and grab a big fist of 7018 and go to bend it behind your neck...then you don't and say theres no way you can do more than what I have right here....bango the guy grabs even more rod to prove you wrong. And man its funny watching them get all the flux down the back of their neck stuck their body from the sweat. Good stuff.Super glueing a tungsten to the bench is a good one. People will fight for a long time trying to get that tungsten up. Soaking rods in diesel let them dry a few days then swap them out and watch the guy flip when the rod is on fire while he is trying to weld. Aw so many good things. Once sent out a test coupon with a guys name on it that had welding wire stuck inside the root of the tube and to the outside. We also stuck bubble gum on the outside. Pretty funny when the test result came back as a fail...best part was the guy was not even on the job as a welder...he still flipped out telling them the testing company screwed up no way he would have failed a test....haha got to love it.'Mike

Reply:Several wraps of welding lead ( I have also used a portable 220 MT unit ) around a vehicle and energize. No matter how many times the vehicle is washed it will collect a layer of dust soon after. Care should be taken in regard to electrical system (fuses/relays). My last use of this was on a managers new white truck. He must of washed that thing 2-3 times a week. If a welder is using a section of pipe as a holder for there wire feed gun, fill with acetylene. It will settle to the bottom (cover bottom with tape if open ended) and when they place gun in holder (with tip of wire glowing) there will be an startling pop."Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." -- Seneca the Younger
Reply:I had a co-worker with very limited welding skills ask me to weld a cracked frame rail on his pickup.  I told him no way before I even looked at, and it turned out it was next to the gas tank.  I told him I'd stay after work and he could do it while I watched from a safe distance. As he was getting all set up, so was I - I got my 12 gauge Mossberg out of my truck and loaded one AA round in it.I told him to be real careful around that fuel tank and I was gonna stand outside when he struck the first arc.  I grabbed my shotgun and as soon as he made an arc BANG!!He came out from under that truck so fast and ran past me like he was on fire.  When he realized he'd been had by the master prankster he settled down and finished his welding job.

ReplyWelding Related Pranksranks lead to resentment, wasted time and possible injury or damage.I was a shop forman for 11 years. If  I found out any employee messed with a welding machine you would be Immediately fired. I would have no choice since the prank could result in an accident.BUT lets back up a step. Why not change your whole consciousness .Try this. Compliment a fellow worker or buy a fellow worker a snack etc.,. By making new friends who knows what could result... the friend could tell you a trick  or give you valuable info you need, but if you have played a prank on them they may not share anything with you. When you are in the trades you spend most of your life doing your work. If you work in a shop, that shop is your home so to speak.Make your shop have a feeling of safety and cleanliness. After all it is where you spend most of your time.Pranks can escalate to the point of a confrontation. You know there are people that WILL NOT STAND for it and others will, but no good can come from it.BTW..... There is no such word as prolly. It is PROBABLY.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 04-08-2009 at 04:33 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:When I was learning to stick weld, the lab tech used to sneak up behind me and toggle the AC/DC switch back and forth during my welds.  It was really BAD.  It used to make the electrode stick and would even snuff out the arc.  Then I would jerk it trying to break it loose.  It would break all the flux off the electrode and make me start over.  It was especially bad when I was doing vertical and overhead.

Reply:Every profession has practical jokes.  Even nurses play practical jokes on each other from time to time.  It's especially funny when a nurse tends to over-react to situations. One way to get a nurse manager is to toss the CPR Anne in a bed, then call a code with no other nurses around.  Nurse manager runs into the room & starts CPR on Anne.........before she realizes she's been had.And I am a nurse manager.  Played lots of practical jokes on lots of people, only rule was, it could never damage equipment or have a possiblity of harm to the "jokee".I like the 12 gauge trick too!!!MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

You guys/gals who've used this stuff know this stuff spreads wickedly. Anyway, wait for a co-worker to walk away from their machine and leave their safety glasses. Place just a little dab (not kidding, a very unoticible dab..) inside the nose bridge and sit back and wait. I've seen folks for hours without noticing the occasional rub or wipe of this stuff and it ends up on everything. Other times it was caught right away, but man it was funny watching someone spread this stuff onto their tools, face, rags, parts until they finally were up to the gag.I had one funny, unlucky retaliation from a co-worker, in which he knew it was me and stealthly walked outside, packed a nice snowball then came back in. He called to me as I was running a surface grinder, I stepped away (nice of him to allow that) and right about the time I relealized what was up - it was deposited right in the middle of my forehead! We couldn't stop laughing.....good times. Reply:At the shipyard we had at least 8-10 welding machines on the dry dock. Someone would at have at least 100 to 200 foot of lead out welding on something. Now those machines had a mind of their own to begin with, after taking about 30 minutes to set your machine and you climb down into some god forsaken hole trouble with your machine is the last thing you need. Im not sure of the proper term but you could turn your machine on place a rod in the electrode and stick the rod into the other guys quick disconnect allen head screw while he was welding and a few minutes later when the guy crawls out of the hole it took ten minutes to drag the lead back to you would see the maddest son of a gun east of the mississippi.Shake and Bake
