I started this thread as a parallel to a discussion of welding reels started by USMCgremlin.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=20086&page=2I have a lincoln300D engine drive, and it's a nuisance to open the side panel to connect welding leads to the lugs.  I use tweco fittings for convience, but I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a good mod for relocating those welding lead lugs to the exterior of the machine. What are the problems with doing this?  What's the best/safest way of doing so?  Where's the best place on the exterior of the machine or on a truck to place the connection point? Thanks,DaveBenson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Thanks,  I'll do a search on Hoffman boxes and see what shows up.  Any chance you could post a photo of what you described?I'm not so concerned with theft, as I am with convienence.  I've got the welding permanently mounted on the truck bed, and it's just a little inconvienent to hook leads up to the studs inside the welder.  I keep my leads locked in a gang box that is welded to the truck bed.My basic concerns are how to weatherproof(to protect when not in use) and insulate the remote connection box.  I can see just wiring a set a pigtails that hang out of the welder.  I guess I was looking for suggestions that are a little more finished and permanent.  I dunno, maybe some tweco connections mounted in the faceplate of the welder?  Or something similar....Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:I would mount stud connectors to the face plate of the machine, then bolt Tweco bolt-on female connectors to the stud connectors.   My Bobcat is set up that way and it works great for me.   I keep my leads coiled up and locked in the utility body drawer instead of on reels.  If they were on reels they'd have to stay outside in the sun and subject to theft.  I used to have short sections of lead with lug connectors bolted to the stud connectors on the machine then Tweco female extension connectors on the other ends of the pony's, but I didn't like the dangling pony's so I went with the bolt-on Tweco's instead and am happy with them.Last edited by DesertRider33; 05-25-2009 at 09:30 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:7A749,Great pics, thanks for taking the time to post them.  I see just what you're talking about now.  One more question.  You mention that the terminals don't need to be insulated from the box.  Is that because The black and red surrounding parts are plastic?  It's tough for my to tell for certain what they're made of in the photo...I've got most of the hardware you've mentioned.  I'd just have to get the box and figure out where to mount it.A box would be good, as it's isolated from the vibrations of the welder engine(somewhat).  A side question...I've had the nuts holding lugs to the studs inside the welder vibrate loose.  Anyone see any harm in using a bit of blue loctite on the stud threads?Desertrider,Thanks, for the suggestion.  I'd considered mounting studs to the exterior of the machine.  I'm hoping someone will post some photos of where they've mounted them on Lincoln machines.  I'm not opposed to doing this, but I would like to know if anyone tried and ran into problems.  Is there an ideal place on the frame of a lincoln welder to mount studs?Any pitfalls that should be avoided?  Stuff that isn't obvious until after you've done the job wrong once?
