Hello,I am in the process of wanting to set up an arc welder in my shop and wanted to get your suggestions on doing it correctly.  This will be going in my stick built building, I am going to install insulation and drywall over the 2 x 4 s but I am not sure if that will be sufficient.  Will I need to build myself a metal welding booth to capture all the sparks ?  Also I have read about needing a correctly sized exhaust fan for the fumes.  Should I install the welder near a door or window ?  How close to the fan should I put it ? My welder will only be used occasionally but I still want to do the correctly and safely.  I have taken a basic welding class but that was awhile ago so I want to make sure I get this set up correctly and use it safely.Thank you,Eric
Reply:I would suggest putting it by a door.  There will be times that you may want to weld something that you can't get inside your shop.  Also it will help with the ventilation.  If you put good thick drywall all the way to the floor I think you will be ok.  That is if you have a concrete floor in your shop???  if you have a large roll up or sliding door you may be able to get by with most any larger fan to keep air circulating.  If your shop is a mostly enclosed shop a ventilation fan will be a good Idea...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
