The ad reads:Welding Table 5'x5' x 1/2 '' thick steel top on legsCan load with forklift. $250.00
Reply:It all depends on the condition of the table, and how it is built....  Pictures???I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Nowadays, there are a lot of tables available pretty cheap.  If it's exactly the table you need, then you'll have it for years and the bargain you got or didn't get won't be so important.  Here's a much thicker one you could probably get for $300, assuming you can find a way to move it.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270397808331
Reply:Thanks, I'll jump on that one!  3/4" is better than I was hoping for and they're local!
Reply:Guess what's sitting in my driveway?!  How's THAT for jumping on it.  Thanks for the lead Jack.
Reply:They think it was some sort of optical/laser table.  Kind of makes sense the way the threaded holes are laid out.For being approx 900 lbs, it came off the truck far easier than we thought it would.  We used two straps like friction brakes wrapped around the legs and hooked to the truck.  Johnny lift helped.  Now I just have to get it on the wheels I have.
Reply:Oh, and the table was my second toy for the day, here is my first:A Benelli M3 Super 90 semi auto / manual pump combat shotgun.  Pistol grip, extended mag, machined for the installed rail.  Came with a scope. It's a good day for toys.
Reply:Glad you got it.  I can't say what the threaded holes in the table are for, but they'd be useful for all sorts of jigs.  Someone on this board might be able to tell you what it was originally built for.I don't know a thing about guns, but my advice is this: never fire that second toy at the first.
Reply:That's some kinda bargain"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Absolutely nothing like a heavy table if you have the need for one.   Mine has a 1" T1 top.   It is a bit odd shaped because it used to be a safety operators canopy for a piece of underground mining equipment.  I couldn't argue it was free.  The legs are 4" X heavy pipe.  Below is a pic of a part I manufacture sitting on the table. I'll try to get a pic of the table by itself later. Reply:Jack, if I shot the table, I bet it would make a REALLY interesting sound.  Millman, your table just might be heavier than mine!  I imagine the safety cage that came from would have had to  be strong since the weight of a mountain is on you waiting to fall when you're in those mines.  I also noticed that the bottom plate on mine is almost 1/2 inch thick!  Shouldn't be ANY problem mounting my welder, tanks, torches, plasma and whatever else I want to pile on down there.  I guess they really wanted it to be dimensionally stable for the laser optics they were using.  The legs are even adjustable to level it.I'll probably be mounting my vice to it as well as a drill press.Any tips to drilling through it successfully with a hand held drill?  I'm assuming lots of cutting oil and... slow, fast? Lots of pressure or moderate?
Reply:thordehr,  The more you have mounted to the tables top the less effective your table will become.  You might want to concider mounting your vice etc to smaller pads with a Reese (square socket) trailer hitch type theme. Then put a square receiever on the table to mount them quickly when needed.I didn't add anything to mine but rings down on the legs to hold my mig gun.  That way I don;'t have to find somewhere to lay it down without hitting the trigger or getting it knocked off in the floor.  Goos quality 300A mig guns going for $250.00 7 more I hate to see them banged around any more than necessary.I also left my table "free standing" so I could move it around the shop with the forktruckIF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
Reply:That's a good suggestion.  If you ever need to work on something big and flat, you won't find yourself bumping into the vise or other gear, and that table has a nice big overhang that would let you attach a double hitch underneath it.  Here are some pictures of mounts I put on either side of my regular work bench, and then one I put next to my welding table.  I can move my vise, grinder or anvil between the three points, or put all three away in a cabinet.Of course, it's even better if you're mounting to something as solid as that table. There are also pictures of vertical mounts, which are better in some ways.  But with your table, horizontal probably makes more sense.
Reply:Wow, hitch mounts, Great ideas!  And the double hitch mount keeps the vice from flopping about with any slop in a single hitch.  Liking this forum more and more.  So, I'm going to weld my vice mount instead of drilling mounting holes.  Still, advice in drilling through the plate if I need to?
Reply:Ideal is a magnetic drill and a really good steel-cutting bit.Less ideal is positioning your drill press on a temporary base underneath/above the steel.Still do-able, probably -- but less precise -- a reasonably torquey low-speed drill.  Use one good bit or a bunch of cheap ones you're willing to throw away.Lubrication.I like the double hitches because they offer better twisting (torsional -- is that a word?) support than a single receiver.  They're $20 at Harbor Freight, although you could do it cheaper buying square tubing.  I combined the HF receiver with ordinary 2"x2"x1/4" square tubing and 3/16" plates.  On one of those pictures you can see I also added a simple bolt for tightening it into place (which is essential with something that vibrates, like a grinder, to keep it from wandering out).
