I have been reading this forum for a while, avoiding doing some actual work.  I want to get into welding, but don't know where or how to start.  I want to weld/build some iron pieces for my house and add a firebox on my BBQ pit.  Specifically, I want to build a dining table with 2" square tubing and use an old cattle gate for the top.  I am considering a Lincoln wire fed welder from Home Depot, but I don't want to waste any money.  The flux cored welder seems to fit the bill fairly well and is not too expensive.  I don't think I will be welding anything over 1/4" plate.  Also, power is not a problem.Any advice? I don't want to break the bank on getting into the hobby.Also, how would I cut the tubing without buying a plasma cutter?
Reply:If I were you, I would go to your LWS and get a 110v mig machine, the LWS will have a higher quality mig, not the home depot version, run flux cored wire so you dont have to pay for gas. Get a portaband or a sawzall for cutting your material. Welding is not a cheap hobby to get into unless you want all crappy machines.

Reply:The Home Depot and Tractor Supply and other 110v MIG welders are not the same as the one that the LWS sell.  If you are going to by a 110v MIG make sure it  has an fine tune control for wire feed speed.  All of the cheap one at the big box stores that I have seen have a stepped wire feed speed.  Also, the LWS machine will come with a gas solenoid (even if you start wth flux core) most of the cheaper ones do not.  Also, the drive motors are usually alot stronger.OAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com

Reply:Is there a difference between a Lincoln SP 140 at a LWS shop and the Lincoln Pro Mig 140 available at HD/Lowes?  What about compared with a Miller Matic 140?  Is the Miller worth the additional $150?
