I am going to make myself a slide hammer but not sure what the rod should be made from. I get these heavy stab pins from the 737 horizontal stab and they have a 1/2 in hole in the center so I was going to order some drill rod but then started thinking stainless rod would be better but then came across 4130 steel rod. If drill rod what hardness should I get. What would be best as far as strength, not work hardening over time and being able to thread the end of it. I also have a lathe and have never machined stainless so not sure if stainless machines very well. Any and all advice would be helpful.
Reply:SIR,drill rod is annealed when you buy it, and it canbe hardened by heat treating, or with a torch.why would you need to make a slide hammer outof drill rod. i made a slide hammer out of CR steel, and the hammer, (slide) was also CR steel. it workedfine. if you wanted it out of something heat treated, use 4140 HT. this can be ordered in various stagesof HT. the normal is about 32 to 36 Rc, but can beharder on request. all you have to do is tell them whatyou want. the higher the Rc, the higher the price.good luck with your project.wlbrown
Reply:What I like about drill rod is the fact that it doesn't rust as easy as regular mild steel. and it is cheaper than stainless. What I don't want is a slide hammer that is covered with rust when I go to use it.So if all drill rod is annealed what about stainless steel. It is actually not to expensive for 316 but I don't no about the work hardening of it when being pounded on.My other thought was 4130 or 4340.Last edited by 737mechanic; 06-04-2009 at 06:53 PM.
Reply:You shouldn't have trouble with cold rolled rust unless you leave it outside. I have a hammer that I made out of cold rolled and brass. I made it 29 years ago and it has darkened with age but even with the Ozarks humidity it's doing fine.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I made mine out of a shaft from a hyd. cylinder, already chromed & threaded on one end! Used a brass piece of stock that is about 3" in dia. Drilled a hole through the center & welded 2 big washers on the shaft so the brass would slide in between.Used it many times & still works great!Flashhttp://flashracecarbodies.com
