Hey you guys,I am going to buil a mini off road kart for my son. So, I am looking for an affordable snowmobile engine. I live in Florida, so we do not see one of those here very often Any info will be greatly appreciated.Alfredo
Reply:Since you live in Florida, there are a coupole things you may not know about snowmobile engines, like they really ain't designed to run in warm conditions.  By the time sled engines become available here for other projects, they generally tend to be pretty fagged out.Sled engines also run fast, so unless you're planning to collect on the kid's life insurance, you'll need to seriously gear the cart down.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Yea buddy. My neighbor recently bought a used snowmobile real cheap. thing has a twin cyl 2 stroker with this torque converter set-up. Must weigh around 450 lbs and really moves. It started fine it the summer though. Probably can be jetted leaner for warm climates, but like Franz said, the thing will be over powered with that much engine. I saw him almost colide with a telephone pole first snow we had. Bet next snow I can get his engine cheap after he totals the thing. I imagine you want snowmobile engine due to simple transmision set-up. Remember those Honda Odisteys (wrong spelling, sorry). They had 250 cc with torue converters. Perhaps you can find one of those. I see them every once in a while for sale. Little tamer(safer) for kids. Or perhaps just a good horisontal shaft honda, briggs or Techumse with centrifical clutch
Reply:built one long time ago ....used a motorcycle engine a honda 90 in it ...worked good and went fast enough
Reply:Thank you guys for the advise. Snowmobile idea "CANCELLED". I will check into the other ones.Thank you
Reply:Snow mobile engines were used in the Tri-Sport vehicle of the late 50's and early 60's.  It was a go cart type vehicle with three wheels.  Two large 10.50 x 8 on the rear and about a 6x6 on the front.  Used a 16 hp 2 cylinder 349 cc engine and depending on the sprockets on the jack shaft was geared to have 25 to near 65 mph top end.  I've gone through 3 used engines in the last 3 boys!  Just use a good 2 cycle oil and keep the speed up as the idling kills the engine off without enough air flow, even with the fan that is on the engine.
Reply:This thread is really old... But for the record..There are a whole bunch of "small" rear engine super pro dragsters out there with Rotax engines in them and they will run 9'S in 1320 feet...And they are water cooled so heat is no big deal.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Wow, brought back from the dead ! I wonder if he ever built anything ?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:If he did I seriously hope he used a lower power 4 stroke.Umm, Rotax. Come a long way from being stationary generator engines in the 60's. I have a few old Rotax mills waiting for use.Craftsman 230a Buzz-box,  Lincoln 140T & 180T, Century K2789, PUROX W202 O/A14" cheapo chop saw that cuts straight and square!A toolbox of the cheapest Chinese tools money can buy"Real" tools all old reliable Husky/Craftsman/Proto stuff
Reply:i thought a snowmobile was cooled from the snow? i might be wrong but thats what i thought.
Reply:Older engines are mostly air cooled.Newer engines are mostly liquid cooled.Snow is used to cool the heat exhanger (kinda like a radiator)Craftsman 230a Buzz-box,  Lincoln 140T & 180T, Century K2789, PUROX W202 O/A14" cheapo chop saw that cuts straight and square!A toolbox of the cheapest Chinese tools money can buy"Real" tools all old reliable Husky/Craftsman/Proto stuff
