What would be a reasonable price for Miller 172 if it is as seller says, only used for about 10 minutes? It comes with everything it originally came with. I'm brand new to welding. Been looking for something to get this hobby started with. The listing is asking $700.00 obo down from $800. I'm not exactly keen on buying used, but if I find a good risk/reward situation, I'll go for it. Thanks
Reply:I have a 172 since about 2000.  I don't use it a lot, but it's been good.  Just wanted to let you know that when I bought mine new at the Miller dealer, it was about $700 then.  That was just the machine and cables.
Reply:Seems like a bit high... I think I only paid $400 for my Challenger (the prior version). The 172 has one less wire/voltage setting and lower duty cycle. But the Challengers work great as a hobby/small project welder. After talking with a repair shop about some issues with mine, they said the biggest problem is the brass motor bushing in the gearbox wearing and resulting in poor wire feed. The same gearbox as the Millermatics, but ridiculously expensive.
