Hello, I'm new to this site, and really, new to the welding arena. I am getting ready to purchase my first welder and have decide to start with MIG - the questions is who's machine? I have been bouncing back and forth between 120 and 230 volt inputs, and have decided that 120v will probably do most of what I can envision doing for now. I am mainly needing a welder for autobody work 22 to 18 gauge stuff. and believe that the 140 amp machines out on the market are plenty for me. The question is which one? On the table at the moment is the Millermatic 140 and the Lincoln ProMIG 140. Of these two machines, which one is the better machine? Also, does anyone know the difference between the ProMIG 140 and the Weldpak 135/140? The Pro-series seems to be a much cleaner design... Thoughts?
Reply:Cheby Ford.......140 amp machines will not really weld at 140 amps DC. If you are even considering 220, go for it now instead of later.IN MY OPINION all you will get out of a 110 volt mig is barely 100 amps.Cheby, ford.........Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:i like both the Miller and lincoln products however when purchasin new the Miller is always way more expensive,,i have a toy 110 Lincoln bought new at Canadian Tire for a mear 500$ CDN and its complete,,the Miller version was 770 and needed an optional gas actuator so the Lincoln was an ez choice and it has saved the day many many times,,
Reply:I agree w/ DavidR. If you feel like spending the $$ now, get the 230v . Better to have the extra amps 'cause I'm sure not too far down the road you'll find a good reason to need 'em. As far as Miller vs Lincoln, same as he said, Cheby or Ford. I don't think you'll be sorry either way. Yeah, the chinese ones are a lot cheaper 'til you need parts or sometimes even consumables. Reply:All the Millermatics come stock with a gas valve installed at the factory and come with a gas regulator and hose included.As far as ProMig 140 or Millermatic 140 goes, pick your favorite color. Either will do equally well within their designed operating parameters.My choice would be the Millermatic 211. It's the same physical sizes as the Millermatic 140 and 180 machines, just a little heavier, but it runs on both 110v and 220v power. The voltage change is made by simply unscrewing the 110v plug and screwing on the 220v plug, both of which come included with the machine. It's a 30 second affair to change plugs, if that. You can get the machine by itself for about $850 if you look for a good deal. The cart is another $100-150 if you want it. It comes with the gas regulator and hose, so if you want to run gas, pick your favorite size bottle and you're ready to weld with gas. If you want to do aluminum, the spool gun is about another $150 or so and plugs right in. The Millermatic 211 is by far, bar none, the single best deal going in small portable migs out there today. Reply:I have just started welding, but did a TON of research on this topic before I bought my welder. As for the Lincoln/Miller debate I found it to pretty much be 50%/50%. Most folks advised me that either machine was good. One thing did stand out however. More folks told me that Miller had a better warrenty program. For that reason I chose the Miller.As to the welder, I would agree hands down with DesertRider. Millermatic 211. Has everything you need in one box. Compact size, Spool gun ready, and welds nice (it's the one I got ) Even though you can only see yourself welding small stuff now, like others have said you will soon find yourself wanting to weld more. The 211 I see as a welder that you will never grow out of. Good for the small stuff, and the bigger stuff. Price might be a consideration for you. One suggestion I would advise, go to your local, small mom and pop type welding supply. Of everywhere I looked, my local shop was by far cheaper. I was able to get the welder, cart, tank of mixed gas, Miller autodarkening helmet, gloves, 3 big spools of wire and some spare tips for just under &1200. Good luck with your purchase.Cheers,Josh
