I can get a Handler 175 at a discount store for $489. It seems like this is a discontinued model that was replaced by the 180.Is the 180 a superior design, or just 5 Amps heavier? Is the 175 indeed discontinued? Is there anything about these welders that I should know?Is this a good machine for someone new to MIG welding? Is there something better that is not drastically more expensive? Thanks for your advice and comments,Doc"I live so far out in the boondocks, my TV runs on Propane."

epending upon what you are welding they are both good machines. The 175 is discontinued. The 180 would be better for sheet metal work because it has a low of 25 amps vs. the 30 of the 175.Of course if you were to use Harris Twenty Guage .30 wire with gas it would be a moot point and you could use either machine.
Reply:Brad-Man,Thanks VERY much for the reply and information. In using your favorite recipe wire, wheat gas would you use with it on mild steel? I will be totally new to MIG welding. I know there are different gases and I want to know which to get to start out with. Also, how thin is thin enough that one should use your approach?Thanka again and Merry Christmas,Doc"I live so far out in the boondocks, my TV runs on Propane."
Reply:The most popular MIG gases are C25 (75% Argon;25% CO2) or 100% CO2. Straight CO2 provides a hotter arc and deeper penetration, which is not the best for thin shhet metal. C25 is used for most thinner work, like body panels, etc.Actually, the best wire to use for light guage sheet would be .024, with C25 gas.Hank
Reply:The Harris Twenty Guage is a cored wire .030" that can weld 22 - 24 guage easily. You DO have to use C25, but you get less burn-through than a .023-.024" wire w/gas...
