I'm looking to build a 6''x10'' utility trailer with 3,500lb. axles, I wanna use tubing but not sure on what size I should use. Is 2'' tubing suffient ? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Reply:Need more details. Tandem or single, intended use, side rail?My advice from building several trailers is to price out the entire project down to every last nut and bolt. Unless it is something custom in nature, or you are extremely picky, or need a hobby, you just can't build one out of all new materials for what you can buy one for. There are ways around that like buying material discounted because of odd lengths or slight surface rust and such, used axles, used wheels, etc. but then it wouldn't be all new. I prefer new torsion axles and sometimes I'll spend more just on running gear than what I could buy an entire factory built trailer for.
Reply:I know you said you want to use tubing. I would suggest channel or angle but you dont have to listen to me. Getting it lisenced might be a time consuming issue thats the case here in PA not sure about Mass.Last edited by 19662; 05-11-2009 at 01:22 PM.

Reply:I guess I was wrong....6"x10" could be done VERY cheap.
Reply:6"x10" is 6 inch x 10 inch6'x10' is 6 feet x 10 feetthis reminds me of the "Stone Henge" bit on Spinal Tab... you'll want to turn your welder to 11
Reply:Its going to be a single axle, I was thinking 2'' angle for the railing. The trailer is for firewood, landscaping, whatever else comes along.
Reply:I would also recomend using channel for the outer perimeter of the frame. Specifically the5" x 6.7 lb/ft variety. Then use 2" square tube cross members. This set-up will allow the regular 2x lumber for the floor to sit flush with the top of the channel. Also if you split a piece of 4" x 4" x 1/4 wall square tube lengthwise down the middle, you will end up with perfectly sized stake pockets for 2 x 4's. Both my truck bed and trailer deck were built in this manner.Cheesy paint drawing for referance. Attached ImagesDarwinian evolution used to fix stupid. Reply:For what its worth, I have a 6' x 10' utility trailer with a single 3500# axle. It is framed with 2" square tubing. It is normally used to haul a Polaris Ranger. I have hauled up to 3,000# very slowly for short distances. (Pallets of water softener salts.) It seems to hold up fine. I paid $850. What I wanted to point out is that it was stressed repeatedly by the dealer that the weight of the trailer itself knocks the payload down to about 2750#.TurkeyLincoln Idealarc 250Millermatic 250Miller Synchrowave 250 Miller Synchrowave 350Thermal Arc PlasmaHH140Miller Diversion
