I decided to post a photo of my latest project before the black powder coating process. I think the black would make it more difficult to see in the pics.I decided to build an asian style headboard for our master bedroom. It will bolt to the wall above the bed and not to the bedframe. I guess thats the latest trend in decorating.  Since I'm new to welding this project has allowed me to get good practice on cutting/fitting/layout. My wife is very pleased with how its turning out. It helps that I drew it out on cad so I could see it before I started and also to get good dimensions on my individual pieces. Its 6'-4" X 3'-0". I managed to keep everything flat and straight.I practiced welding on some scrap pieces to get my heat and speed set correctly to get good penetration and no burn thru on the 1/16" material. I'm grinding the welds smooth to hide the connections.Timmer Attached Images
Reply:I'd say you got plenty of practice just cutting true 45° angles. That's something I've been having a little trouble with and hiding the mis-aligned angles with my welds. I need to find a good tool to use on my chop saw verify I have the angle I want. Nice job man!
Reply:I've always struggled with true 45 degree angles with my horizontal bandsaw. It does not have a angle gage on it. For this project I welded up a 45 degree jig/spacer so I didn't have to adjust my saw. I was able to cut dead on angles and all my squares ended up being really square. It would have been difficult for me to fill in gaps and make things work well.Timmer
Reply:Wow man, that turned out REALLY nice. Im sure it'll look awesome once powdercoated/painted!Do you have any pictures of this 45* template/spacer you made?Corners blow for me Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy!
Reply:that looks great.  I'll be making one similar to that in a couple of weeks, although mine will not be bolted to the wall, it will be a complete frame..  what size material did you use?
Reply:The outer frame is 2" x 1.25" x .125. The inner members are 1" x 1" x .0625. I don't have access to a camera so photograph the jig, so I sketched it up on cad. I'll try to attach the sketch. The little "tab" at the top of piece #5 keeps the jig from squishing out when the clamps squeeze the material tight.Timmer Attached Images
ReplyPractice makes perfect......ooks like there is plenty of places to attach the handcuffs.
Reply:How about a small stand off to attach it to the wall.  No more than an inch, just enough to give it a 3-D effect, or a place to grab on to.  You could hide it behind either the uprights or the horizontal framework.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:I was thinking about trying for the 3-D effect by putting the recessed side against the wall. My inner members are flush with one side and recessed on the other side. But I wanted the recessed side toward the room. I like the "spacer" idea. That way I could have both. I appreciate the ideas........Timmer
ReplyPractice makes perfect......lus, as Pookie pointed out, easier to attach the handcuffs ......
Reply:dont attach the handcuffs..weld em to the frame,,,post the beads and some fotos of this in use ...?
Reply:not all people with metal bed frames uses hand cuff (in that manner), but, all people who uses handcuffs (in that manner) have metal beds.  making a metal bed was part of the reason i wanted to learn how to weld.  dont ask me why i want a metal bed.
