Any help would be great! I opened 6010 and 7010 1/8" electrodes a couple weeks ago, obviously when I wasn't thinking at my full potential lol. They were 10lb plastic boxes that were vacumed sealed. So, Can I throw them in my cooking oven for a while and than vacum seal the ones I wouldn't be using? If so what tempature and how long will I wanna keep them in there for? Thank you
Reply:Metal rod can and a light bulb

Reply:I have seen an ammo box fitted with a small light bulb utilized to keep rods free from moisture.

Reply:xx10 electrodes should NOT be dried in an oven. In very humid environments, they can be stored at temperatures not exceeding 150* F, IIRC.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:XX10 series rods don't need to be kept in an oven. In fact if the rods are too dry that can effect how they run. Low hydrogen rods like 7018 on the other hand do like to be kept in a rod oven. Too much moisture will effect how these rods run. If you are doing "code" work, you need an oven. However for "average" use, basic common sense storage will probably be fine for most guys as long as the rods don't sit for long periods.I know a few guys who will open a fresh can, and immediately break down the rods into small batches and vacuum seal them in food storage bags to keep them dry and then put the rods they plan to use right away in one of the o-ring sealed tubes. This prevents the "extra" rods from absorbing moisture until they are ready for use without the need for an oven for non-code work..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. o not dry 6010 cellulose rods out or heat them in a rod oven.If you want to dry out 7018 quick just stick the rod to the pipe and let heat up until the moistuer leaves the rod. If the rod is very moist you will see the rod change to a lighter grey color as the moisture disapates. usually takes 5-10 seconds depending on amps.
Reply:I actually built a rod holder that I charged with vacuum (just by borrowing a line from a car manifold for a couple minutes). I could pull it down to close to a full vacuum with an AC pump. Whether it actually helped or not is still up for discussion. I honestly couldn't tell the difference, but I would think it should work. It would require no power, so maybe Obama can give someone a grant to experiment more with it.
Reply:How about just put them in an air tight metal container like an ammo box and store that box on top of your water heater. I have not tried it, but seems like it would work.
Reply:60xx rods don't need to be kept in an oven as DSW says, just store in a dry place.7018 rods on the other hand need to be kept in an oven once their manufacturers package is opened. The reason is 7018 when exposed to the atmosphere picks up moisture from the ambient humidity and this moisture (H20) breaks down in the welding arc and the hydrogen atoms can become embedded in the weld metal which leads to crack formation (it's called underbead cracking). These cracks don't show on the surface of the weld bead but they are there and show up on xray images. They signifigantly weaken the weld and like any crack can grow as the weld ages.So for any 7018 welds that matter, you should have a rod oven."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25

SW is right on. XX10, need some moisture to run properly. 7 to 10 percent IIRC.Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (
Reply:I had to weld with some 7018 rods that I knew were damp.Tied a small bundle of them together and shoved them into the muffler of a piece of stationary equipment that was running. They seemed to be fine by the time I needed them.Sorry to even mention it,but most of my welding seems to be of the desperation/emergency type..
