My folks picked up a gate in Mexico that they'd like me to hang for them. The hinge appears to be a barrel hinge with a strap welded to it. The strap was made by bending two pieces of steel about 15 degrees and welding them together to form a Y shape. The closed end of the Y was then welded to the center of the barrel hinge. Before I cut them off and replace them with a different hinge, does anybody know the proper way to mount this gate using the existing hinge? The attached photo shows what the hinge looks like.Thanks.-Andrew Attached Images

Reply:what kind of post/wall is it being mounted to?If it's a wood post I'd just weld a plate to the end of the Y making it's Triangle but have the plate extend vertically beyond the width of the Y Essentially making a T out of it. If it's round pipe, just weld the open end of the Y to the pipe.If it's Masonry/concrete, bore out the hole large enough to insert the Y and fill comletely with concrete or other bonding agent. You might boar the hole out a little wider on the inside to create almost a dovetail plug inside the hole. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:It's to weld onto pipe. It is that long so the "V" will fit to the round of the pipe and then rock can be put around the pipe to make a rock column.

ick up some heavy duty bullet hinges. Depending on the height of the posts, you may need to add spacers to the hinges for them to function properly and so that the gate will be able to open completely.Alternatively, you could cut the existing pin apart to get it out (at the very least, the flatbar bits!), find a piece of pipe that matches the existing two hinge points in size, add a spacer block and go that route. Hopefully the gate came with two hinge points! Also, depending on the size of the gate, it might be worth supporting the other end of it with a cradle. Also I would weld a washer on top of the pins to keep them from falling through. That's important! I Suppose it depends on the gate design. My personal favorite though, you take a narrower pipe with an OD that is slightly smaller than the ID of a pipe welded to the gate (the outer pipe should be capped to keep water out!). If the post is level, it saves so much headache. The main trade of with this is if that if the post isn't level it'll hang funny.Last edited by mb_welder; 09-12-2012 at 06:42 AM.
Reply:Gordon is on point. I see these all the time, when I go to Monterrey. Welders will cut/break off concrete on columns exposing the rebar. The tabs are then welded to the rebar cage and the column is then refinished.
Reply:Thanks for the advice, everybody. I know how I'm going to hang this gate now. There's so much knowledge at this site!
