I remember two aphorisms related to welding.  These are short phrases that a noob repeats while trying to figure out how to do something.I was given one welding lesson by a friend about 20 years ago.  He said:"Welding is a casting process" and I often repeated it to try to mix the 2 pieces of parent metal and the rod into a nice puddle in the years that followed. When I worked in a fab shop I used the overhead cranes.  I really liked the power to lift heavy stuff but I sometimes I'd get the load swinging and didn't have an intuitive way to dampen the movement.  I asked the old crane operator and he said:"Catch up to the load" and it completely worked.  It was really satisfying to be able to see the load start to swing, pick the right button, wait for the right time, and move the crane over where the load had swung to.  The load stopped dead in space.I didn't get much training.  Do you guys know other sayings that sum up what to do or how to do a thing? In particular, is there a phrase that describes how to fill in a keyhole while stick welding?  So far I just end up with a mess that I have to go over several times (after removing the slag and maybe grinding.)Miller Syncrowave 180SDLincoln WeldPak 100 with gasHandheld Milwaukee BandsawO/A Cutting Torch

Reply:"Is there a saying to remember when to use DCEP verses DCEN?"I was wondering something similar; how to remember if  DCEP is Straight or reverse polarity?I was told to use my hand to make a minus symbol. The minus stands for Straight or DCEN.Since I know more about electricity than welding, I think about electron flow. The electrons flow from the more negative to the more positive. So, in Reverse polarity DCEP, electrons flow from work to electrode. In Straight polarity, DCEN, electrons flow from the electrode to work. I did mention more positve or more negative because with a negative voltage, electrons flow from the negative voltage to ground. Electron Beam Guns use negative voltage supply's rather than straight polarity to make the Tungsten last similar to DCEN for TIG. DCEP evaporates Tungsten when Tigging. I self learned that the xpensive way.To answer your question, when to use DCEP or DCEN;  what I do is, TIG is opposite of 7018. To know what 7018 uses, I look at the crib sheet taped to the inside of a toolbox.

Reply:Ive seen where weldors are needed in Elko, NV for repairing mining equipment I guess. This is wisdom I got from an old miner: Dont worry about the mule going blind, just load the wagon (I gues mules went blind in the mines).  Its all about getting things doneI have a couple newer takes on that philosophy; Less talk more rock and shut up and rock. It would sound better if it was like ; less talk, more welding or shut up and weld. This one is for naysayers but always cracks me up;  It'l  never work and it'l never be the same.
Reply:"You have to understand what you are attempting to accomplish before you start."This was some advice given to me when I started to TIG. Don't go in without having a thorough understanding of what is actually going on and what you are really trying to accomplish besides just making a nice bead. Your practice time and self-critiquing will have a much higher value if you do. "Don't skip any f*cking steps."Another piece of advice I received when I started to TIG. It's so easy to get excited about getting under the hood. I now view the hood time as the reward for all of the hard work during the prep, fit-up, and cleaning.
