What rods do you use the most when repairing equipment in the field? 6013 for thin material? 7018 or 7014 for the big stuff?
Reply:I use more fluxcore wire than stick, but with stick, mostly 6011 and 7018, with a little 6013 thrown in once in a while.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I try to avoid equipment repair but if im out in the stuff, then the same as desertrider.  Coreshield-8 is a nice wire for heavy repair.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Gonna raise some hackles with thisEquipment repair is difficult unless you have very close contact with the equipment, know how it works, what it does, or have actually used the equipment.  The best equipment guys are the ones that are around it on a daily basis.  They know what makes it break. You have to be able to "read" what made it break in the first place."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Have you guys ever done any aluminum dock/boatlift repairs? For where I live this could be a potential money maker. Gotta love the land of 10,000 lakes.
Reply:I agree with Sam and Matt in many respects, but come on, the Crotch of Engineers having any plan beyond how long can we make this job last and how many meetings can we "take" before the job is completed is beyond my experience.  The only thing I ever saw the Crotch complete on time was another change order.  Damn nice place to make money from if you can wait 6 months to get paid though. The first order of business on any repair job is when will the money come.  Without knowing that don't strike an arc.  I've pulled off more than one job because the draw didn't arrive, and watched a few guys eat it when they ran in to complete the job we abandoned.

Reply:Hey Hank where do you get the most business?
Reply:in central MN.  I go there frequently to fish and I bring my stuff with me if need be.

Reply:I avoid it because doing so decreases my stress levels.    1) Things never break sitting in the yard, they always break in the middle of a major undertaking.   I hate being rushed with someone standing over my shoulder.2) people rarely care for my bills when im done fixing their screwups.   3) my profit margins are way way better with structural's than they will ever be with repair.4) the conditions are rarely good, the works far to laborious, and getting covered head to toe in grease is never my idea of a good day.5) around here most every contractor fixes there own equipment.  both large and small.6) no one ever seems to appreciate my failure analysis and what they did stupid and what i did to fix their screwups.7) i dont have to do repair work to make the monthly bills, so for all the reasons above i will still try to avoid it.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Good reasons.  Equipment work is here and there, structural is not quite as strong.  I like equipment repairs, depending on the situation they are a lot more prevalent here than buildings.  Of course there are not a lot of people in this area, one bay area suburb has more people in it than my entire stateAnd we like it that way.
