11ga mild steel, 3/32 filler rod. 110A maxFeel free to comment/critique.So once you tack the peice together and show the teacher, you have one chance to finish without restarting.Outside corner horizontal.Horizontal butt and lap jointsHorizontal fillet.  I screwed up, this was supposed to be overhead. And finally, the ugly weld. I forgot to tack the back and this side lifted up creating a gap when I was welding the lap joint.  Vertical up, the first pass was mostly on the "top" peice and full of holes. I made a second pass to make sure they were fused.
Reply:You need a lot more practice.   JGSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:That I am well aware of. I have ~40 hours logged so far.
Reply:Hey torQ, maybe you already know this, but i'll say it anyway:make sure your body is comfortable and solidly grounded (in a kong-fu sort of way) before you strike the arc.  when you're comfortable you can focus on the puddle and the movements of your arms/hands.  tig welding is tricky enough you dont want to distract yourself with shifting weight (of your body).good luckjudging by the heat signatures and the backside, the penetration seems pretty good.  have you dont much destructive tests?
Reply:This was the problem with my class setup, the table was at my knees and we didn't have any lower stools to sit on. On top of that I used a hand control for the whole semester so holding the torch in a comfortable position and varying the amps was not an easy task.I have not done any destructive tests yet except for bending a 16ga fillet weld. The material gave way and the weld never moved.
Reply:Weld the whole thing with no restart?Put some spare wire in a place where you can grab it without looking as you finish up with the piece in your hand so you can grab it as soon as possible and continue without stopping/Starting...See pic #4...You can't do that amount with one piece of wire...If thats what they want then that's what you do.I can do it...Not easy.Good luck....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Right, once I started I couldn't start over again. I used roughly two pieces of filler rod for the whole peice. 5 welds total.  I had quite a bit of trouble with bubbles in my puddle, so I had to go over some spots to remove them. Would that be caused by insufficient gas coverage or contamination of my weld? And my arms were mostly unsupported for this whole peice. I need to make myself a comfortable height welding table at home.
Reply:Originally Posted by sn0border88Just for arguments sake, if you cant do the fillet weld in #4 with one piece of wire you seriously need to reconsider the size of the weld your trying to put down.

Reply:I use a hand control exclusivly, and I have to say that you MUST be in a position where you can precisely control the heat. Seems to me that you should practice how you rest the torch and/or your hand to the work. Also don't be afraid to stop if things aren't going smoothly. You should be able to pick up where you stopped without trouble.
