i don't have plasma or torch at my disposal, i'm wondering what y'all would recommend to cut a circle in 1/4" plate, it doesn't have to look like a perfect punched circle, but if it could be a pretty clean 4" hole, i'd have what i need.i just don't know, so i'm looking for advice. thanks

ots of low buck options. Jig saw, sawzall, hole saw and a drill.I recently learned (on this site) that when using a hole saw, drill some small holes where the cut will be for the metal chips to get out. No flutes on regular hole saws to carry them away.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Hole saw if you can get it to fit in the drill press. Not sure I'd try to hand drill something that large. If you just need the hole, not the slug, drill an entrance hole and cut it with a jig saw.Go old school and drill a ton of tiny holes inside along the perimeter just touching each other. Then go at the inside with a file or grinder. Smaller the drilled holes, the less you'll have to grind or file..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I wonder if a local tech school would be willing to do it for free. I am sure it would take little to nothing to do this.

wicked4x4 - perhaps a fellow WWW brah would hook you up? APB: any ready, willing, and able plasma-ready welder in the SanDog area, W4x4 could use your assistance.
Reply:thanks for all the responses guys. i thought about jigsaw, and drilling holes to make it easier...but just don't want to take that time. unfortunately i don't have a press to make a hole saw easy for me.i'm in the process of gathering materials to build a smoker. firebox will be 1/4" and was hoping to do round ports / air inlets on it...will probably just make rectangular ones instead with sliding covers.thanks again for advice and ideas.
Reply:You could use a hole saw in a hand held drill. 4 inches is a bit tight for a jigsaw.
Reply:Contact these guys in San Diego, ask for Hernan. Tell them Jim Colt (from Hypertherm) sent you......and I'm sure they will be able to plasma cut any hole you want for a reasonable price. They are a non profit organization that trains wounded veterans how to do a variety of metal fabricating jobs...they have a cnc plasma table with a Hypertherm Powermax85. www.workshopsforwarriors.orgBest regards, Jim Colt
