Only a few hundred feet like this...here a section I've patched..They are wanting to sell the house is the reason its not being replaced....yet

Reply:Great repair, (in the post below its not about your repair you did a great job)America must be totally diffrent to australia, workcover wood knock that back because a child can climb and fall through that handrail, with our handrail's or railing in australia if the raill is off the ground 1.5 mtr then the gap in the railing bars must be no bigger then 100mm.

Reply:On a side note over here , if the Balustrade complied at the time of construction its OK, butAs soon as person who derives his "Rusty handrail i'm fixingrimary source of income" ie a "Rusty handrail i'm fixingrofessional" in the eyes of the law touches any part , the whole is to come to code.Another thing , if the rust was so bad in that place , dont tell me the rest was fine.But there is timber under the rusty photos and Concrete under the repairs.Last edited by Brett; 07-10-2011 at 04:44 AM.A good guess is better than a bad measurement

Reply:A few years ago I was refered by a company in atlantic city (NJ shore) to do repairs to a framework that held up the AC unit of a 12 story condo. I am usually price out under everyone and thats why I normally get the BS jobs, but this was a 40'x40' framework of 12" I-beams, 14 stories above the ground, overtop the elevator framework, that I literally stuck my pocket knife through the web of the beam. They wanted me to bring materials up through the service elevator to "temp repair" for 2-3 years when they replace the entire unit w/ new framing.I couldn't have ran fast enough when they wanted a temp repair.Down at the shore areas, aluminum or better should always be used. Even if you have 100% water tight welds, condensation will always get into hollow areas of tubing. If using steel because of strength and you can't afford stainless, fully welded joints, and blow 2 holes in each sealed tube and have it hot dipped galvanized.Once steel starts rotting at the shore, it is impossible to fix without redoing the entire job. There will always be rust parts that don't even look bad, but you will definitely be returning since you didn't do a good repair the first time.
Reply:Very good looking repair eventhough it is not code compliant. A child could fall through the spacing the risers has to be a certain distance apart. Im not sure what the requirements are but if a child could put his or her head through the spacing it would be illegal, and there would be fines or the like. Maybe it could be ok if it were a private place where no other people had access to it nevertheless it would something th think about.Good luck with it anyway it has a great view i'm gealous, wish it were mine..... by the way where is it?wbolden
Reply:According to rules not codes here in NJ (it still depends on what mood the inspector is in), if the railing was installed pre code days (not just accepted by inspector), then it is grandfathered and can be repaired to "original" condition even if it does not meet current codes. If you have to remove it, even to just sandblast, it must be reinstalled to current codes. So railings fall under the same rules as house repairs, knock 3 walls and 3 corners down, rebuild them, and then knock the last corner down and it is still only considered a repair. Still it depends on whether or not the inspector had to deal with their kids that morning.
