These are some of the recent projects that I've taken the time to snap pics on. It's been rather busy so not much time for pics.   First is todays project. Normally I wouldn't of even considered this job but after seeing a few similar jobs successfully done on here I decided to try it. I know the guy who had this hole knocked in the oil pan and know he won't blame me if something goes wrong so decided to help. I was afraid I'd have a lot of problems welding it up but overall it went better than I expected though not perfect. In the first pic you can see the hole after a little preliminary cleaning. Not the best situation in the world. But it would of required pulling the engine to remove the oil pan. I decided to try to use MIG for the repair. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get it clean enough but I also knew it would keep the heat to a minimum which would minimize the chance of cracking. Turned out I was right to be afraid of the cracking. Anyway some specs first. I used my XR feeder and gun with my XMT304 that I loaded up and took to the shop with a lift in it. They had a 220V plug I could use so I didn't have to run it off my Legend. I tried running in both adaptive and non adaptive pulse with my Optima pulser but for some reason I've been having problems with the starts on that. I used it the other day on a tank and unless everything was perfect I couldn't get the arc to start half the time. On this though it was much worse and I couldn't get it work 90% of the time. Thus I switched to straight MIG and set it at 18V and around 250ipm with 0.035" 4043 wire.  I did small stitch welds with most smaller than 3/4" and allowed to cool between welds. At no time was I not able to hold my hand on the pan after allowing for 1 minute of cooling so I think I'm safe temp wise.   The first crack was heard after my first weld that was about 5/8" long. It was a small crack near the bulge in the patch. I didn't have any from then till I was nearly finished. I did the weld from the top of the end patch to the corner of the pan when I immediately heard a big crack. Sure enough there was a long crack running from about the middle of that last bead way across the pan. I finished welding the patch and then cleaned up the cracks. I stop drilled them and then attempted to stitch them. This part didn't work as well as the patch had. I couldn't get all the oil out of the crack itself which made for a lot of blowups rather than actual tacks. But I kept at it till I got at least some structural support of the cracks if not sealed up. I then cleaned it all up again and coated it with Seal All my favorite sealant for situations like this. Reply:Next on the list is a plow repair we did a little over a week ago. Due to other projects and emergencies going on I had to do this one in the heat of the day and nearly got baked doing it. I do wish I'd had a little more metal the right size to of reinforced it with but I think I got the the main stress point spread out enough for it to hold.  The first two pics shows how I pulled it back in place. This is one reason I like to have a block on the end of my poles because it allow me more flexibility. The next pic shows that this is the plow that I fixed the sweep for a while back. Next shows the worst part repaired after cutting out the cracks and full penetration welding. The last pic shows that I added a fish plate to the bottom of the tubes and another gusset on the other side of the mount. Reply:This last set of pics is of a quicky spare tire mount for a small trailer. Nothing to fancy but functional. Reply:Nice work, but why did they put the spare on the traffic side? You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Albert Einstein
Reply:Thanks. I really don't know why he wanted it there. Probably didn't think about it and I was to busy to think to ask him.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Why do things run in batches. It always seems like a get groups of the same job come up. Got another call today with a aluminum oil pan. This one wasn't as bad as the last. Did about the same method. The first shot shows after I'd used a carbide burr to clean around the bad spot. I then broke and fished the loose piece out of the hole so it wouldn't come loose later and mess something up. Had one crack show up on the side but I think it was there before I started since I never heard a crack and it was noticed after the first two or three tacks on the opposite side of the patch. I did peen these welds as well as allow them to cool to try and remove some of the stress. Coated with Seal All afterwords to take care of the pin holes I know had to be in it.   At least this car had been stopped before damage was done. I learned today that the other one didn't survive startup do to spun bearings. The owner knew it was a gamble which unfortunately didn't pay off.
