Reply:Yes, it looks exquisite. That 2 sided column is a supporting structural part--holding up the roof corner.I'd find it hard to believe that this would withstand much static load, besidesseismic and WIND load. Was this engineered/stamped/signed off?Blackbird
Reply:Hey Katcracker, that looks great. How did you join the cast iron to the steel. I made some of those post years ago and use OA to braze them together. Been holding up a porch now for at least 15 years. If I did more I'd rather weld them.
Reply:Those are nice.

ave there's probably not all that much load on that column. Most overhangs built like that are almost self supporting when finished. I've seen any number of wooden hollow round columns used in that type of application that are rotted completely thru and the roof hasn't come down even with heavy snow loads. The biggest issue would be buckling, and the iron that seperates the square stock helps with that greatly. If you ever take a look at the prefab stamped steel "iron" columns like these, they are made of much lighter gauge material and they are often used to carry the majority of the load of the roof and snow on light weight sunroom porches..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:How do yall like that gas can in the back. hahaha just noticed that, it was set there after the work was done. The column is 11ga with the cross pieces I think you could double the weight (which isnt much).
