Reply:Very cool and utilitarian. What type motor is that? How is the throttle controlled?
Reply:I don't know alot about air boats but isn't that kind of dangerous without any chicken wire or expanded metal in front of that fan?
Reply:That's the sweetest thing I've seen all day.  What kind of tubing is that?

Reply:it's either a lycoming or continental plane engine, they can cost about $16,000-20,0000 just to rebuild (fun fact)
Reply:i like the asymetric bracing .....
Reply:I've never understood how these things don't tip over. they look top heavy and when you turn it seems the force from the rudder would push the top to the outside of the turn, seems very unstable but obviously they work, I just don't get it.HH187Hobart 500i plasma cutterClark 4.5" GrinderDewalt 14" chop saw30 gallom 1.6 hp compressor10 gallon pressure pot sand blasterlots of hand tools
Reply:I lived in Florida for a year or so. I was always amazed everytime I saw one of these airboats. Guys spend so much time and money building works of art with the metal work on them.
Reply:Nice Work!  How 'bout a video when she's up and running.  I haven't seen very many 6 cyl on air boats...mostly 4's.  She ought to haul a$$.What's the tube mat'l / thickness?  What process are you using...MIG/TIG/OA?  Love to see some closeups.FWIW...a field overhaul by a name shop on a 6 cyl Lycoming TIO-540-S1AD (540 cu in turbocharged) cost $40,000 in 2000.  A factory new engine was +$80K.  That's just the engine...no turbo, fuel servo, mags, alt, or starter....just the long block.  Good news for the airboat guys is that their motors don't have to be airworthy so the shop charges could be a lot less....you can even do it yourself...they aren't that complicated compared to most auto engines.  But the parts are still sky high (pardon the pun).Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Replyooks good. With all the boats and accesories in the background I'm surprised that you haven't turned that floor fan into a "fan boat" yet! That would be a neat conversation item. Of course you have to be careful if you mounted casters on the bottom or your fan would sail away! .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Those of us who are pilots understand the need for airworthiness, thus the quality rebuilding of the engines. However, why couldn't the parts the A&s take out be used for projects like this ?  I'm sure that over time, enough scrap could be accumulated to build up a complete engine that would push your boat.I would bet that the small airstrip A& wouldn't have  enough volume to make this come true but if you live near a larger airport/facility,,,,Is this a real possibility ?RoGrrr Originally Posted by BTDNice Work! But the parts are still sky high (pardon the pun).

Reply:good looking rig for sure.
Reply:Corvair 6 cylinder engines work well on these too and look a lot like the Lycoming.  Much cheaper too.  The 180 Turbo corvairs got great mileage on 92 octane.  Anyway, that was a nice looking project you posted.  Be sure to show us more of your work.DougMiller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:boat looks good man, and aircraft motors arent that expensive to rebuild or up keep, ive got one on my boat and so does my dad, and they are easier to work on that a car motor. you can make close to the power a car motor does with a fraction of the weight. any of  you guys ride the kissimmiee chain of lakes or the st johns river.

Reply:Speed,    Beautiful work.  I assume you are using TIG.. what tubing, what filler?  Perhaps Aircraft Spruce, high volume runners (i.e. lower in price) chromoly?--zip
Reply:Hey John...it really looks good.  One thing Im not clear on though.  Are you still running the original turbo you mentioned?  Didnt see what you were unning listed in the gallery.
Reply:Cool bike and riding. Hey if you built that air boat haul with aluminum that thing would be so light and fast it would probably fly. Never mind i did not see all pics.Last edited by dcc432; 03-04-2011 at 11:58 AM.
