Hello everyone. I work in a production welding environment and I am on my way to being a lead welder within the company and would really like to know if their is any input you guys can give me on how to get my guy's to stop missing welds. I have been a welder for about 6yrs now and we started to do a lot of hiring and the new guys just cant seem to put a part out the door without any rework being done with the weldment. Any comments or ideas are welcome even constructed criticism. Thanks
Reply:How much training are the "new guys" getting with concern to the parts that they are welding? Are they given detailed prints or just verbally instructed? Do they have prototype components to look at for visual reference? What kind of QC procedures are performed before the weldments are allowed to leave?http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Have you tried floging? Seriously the positive/ negitive reinfocement thing works wonders. It's amazing how fast guys take care of gear when they have to pay to replace it, or get docked pay for rework..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:No one is perfect, well.....maybe ZT........so things will get missed once in a while. If it happens a lot then they need to be shown a better way to approach the work being done. Meaning, maybe a specific pattern needs to be established and everyone welds that specific "thing" the same way. IE: Do weld "A" and then "B" then turn the part to the right and weld "C","D", then "E", flip top to bottom and weld "F". Adapt to your specific job, of course. I do this when doing production runs of wine/cd racks and candle holders etc.. Gets you in a rhythm and making fewer misses. Makes training people easier too. Also lets you see if the new guy/gal is one of those that just ain't gonna listen, like not letting you finish explaining the task and saying "yeah, yeah.....I got it." Or "well I'm going to do it this way...." I love these people!!!!200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Are these guys trained welders or just joes off the street? Many companies try to save a buck by pulling guys with no welding background off the street only to pay them 10 bucks an hour. Im not saying thats the case here, but just asking if it is. If you are a welder and you are missing welds, you lose your job. If you are not a welder but working as one and you are missing welds, then that is what happens when you are learning and the company needs to accept that is what you get by hiring untrained welders. I do want to give you some help here. Need to know what they are building and where they are missing the welds. Maybe also, their skill level.UA Local 598
Reply:Not sure what type of work or how much production is expected, but implement a team or buddy system where guys are checking each other's welds. If you've got some experienced guys with people skills consider teaming a new guy with them so they can keep an eye on them. Basically you need a system to get one more set of eyes on the widget before it goes out the door. If a guy keeps screwing up, get rid of him. Plenty of people looking for work these days...
