I have a new project that I am working on its a late 1960's ji case b wb 12 foot disk. I have a kubota 8540 and want to cut this disk down to get through gates, reduce work on the tractor and make it possible to trailor. keep in mind a new 9 foot disk is 10k.  What is the widest this disk can be without getting in trouble?  Here are some pics I will take any and all advice!! Replyooks like you can remove the outside 3 or 4 blades and leave one or two sticking out past the center carrier bearing.  You will also have to shorten the square shaft and re use the hardware from the blade that is now the outer blade.  Looks like a worth while project.
Reply:Thanks for the response.  This project would be alot easier if the toungue was straight.  Anyway I am worried about leaving 2 blades past the carrier.  However, I figure I need 6 blades on each side.  After looking at other disks online most have one disk past carrier on the inside and outside and three in between which would make 5 and I want 6.  I guess if I wanted to be anal I could run three carriers.  Yes I will have to srink the frame.  The center spline broke that held the hydraulics I guess I could go back with the same size tubing maybe slide another peice of tubing in the other with the only issue being drilling holes which has always been a big problem working on big plate and having to align pins on either side.  Sorry for the long post.  I like to think about it once overbuild and never comeback.One other question should I just rebuild it to 12 feet and see what happens with the clutch on the tractor?

Reply:Farm,Thanks for the response.  I dont know if you can see the axle is bent on it right now.  I did that just backing it into the hole its in now.  It has two blades outside the carrier and I was worried about bending the axle vs breaking u bolts.
Reply:Is the option of trading it for a smaller one out of the question?Lots of the time folks have to work their way up to the big gear and I would think someone would jump at the chance to trade up and you trade doun. Reply:no trading its not an option. this thing was trashed bent axles broken center spline bearing are shot and its old.
Reply:To save the clutch on the tractor start out with the disc raised or only partially as deep as you want to go. It will cause a lot less stress on the clutch.
Reply:maybe i will just take out the 2 feet sticking out of the frame and shorten the axles.  they are bent anyway. I just dont know if i can make the spacing work with the frame and carriers.  I see how i can move it though, I will just take it apart.  It doesnt take very long and i wont have to move it that often.
Reply:Running the third carrier wouldnt be all bad it would give you more support and it would add weight to make it cut good. Reply:I wouldn't worry about overbuilding it. Sounds like it will be used in food plots?.?.? so it will get beat to hell, not to mention most folks have little to no experience using farm equipment properly but some how become Johnny Appleseed two weekends a year. Roots stumps, boulders.....I'd build it like a tank, almost like a forestry disk...LOL Good luck and keep us posted.
Reply:I think I am going to keep the frame the same but cut the three disc's outside the frame.  This would bring me to 6 discs on each gang.  On the front I am going to put 3 carriers on each gang.  I will use the half spools off the back that I remove.  I have to replace the center spline but I am going to beef up the wall size.  How would ya'll straighten the pipe that is bent that the hydro is attatched to?
