Member kolot brought the bike up to me this AM and we were joined by Tozzi for the duration..Relatively easy fix with the right piece of tubing at hand...Little cut here and there with the bandsaw and we were good to go..Pics below explain everything..Trouble area..Tubing patch..In place..All welded up..Maybe 150 amps..5356 filler...3/32 Red end (With the tungston bend trick for the bottom)..All is good and I gave kolot a few pointers about tie offs..He will get it soon!I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok, I gotta know what the tungsten bend trick is.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
Reply:You just know someone is going to ask about the ' tungsten bend trick' ... Like me....???edit.. I told you someone was going to ask...Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

Im gonna have to find a block of copper so I can give that a try.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:3/32 Red end (With the tungston bend trick for the bottom).....zap![/QUOTE]How did bending the tungsten help you in this repair? Or any other weld that you have done? It seems to me that proper torch angle would yield the same results. I have not seen this done before so I don't understand the advantages.
Reply:I can defiantly see an advantage for getting into a really tight spot.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:Tight area at the bottom, the bend of the Tungsten makes it much easier to get in there while still retaining good vision on the puddle. A big THANK YOU again to Zap. learned a couple of great tips in a short time. Shop is how a weld/ Machine shop should be. And I also think Zap get's quite a bit of practice with that TIG from what I saw there. The real beauty in this fix is it is done without a tear down and re machining of the part, save a lot of time.  As you know, Zap, and Tozzi, great guys, know there stuff. Let's do it again, ride out was easy, I'll bring the burgers and beer."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:The base metal looks dirty as heck! How did you weld it? I made a fuel tank for my son's 2stroke 49cc motor and it sprung a leak. So when I went back to tig it up, I had tons of 2stroke oil contaminating my joint. I almost threw it in the trash. How did you get it clean? And how did you weld it? Reply:This is really for areas that seem impossible to aim at normally..Turn your gas up a little bit maybe 3-4 cfh over what you run also and turn it back when you are done.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I have absolutely no idea how to tig weld, but trust me on this, I have seen enough of Zap's weld to know, if he says it works............I missed the dime as well
Reply:How do you keep from frying the transmission? I would have thought it would need to be completely disassembled and just the bare component welded.Would seem that all the seals and gaskets would melt.Last edited by davo727; 07-25-2011 at 08:39 PM.Miller Synchro250 bought new 1997Millermatic200Miller Bluestar 2E . Reply:Zap, I have to ask. I see that on every TIG weld you do, you use a "red end" thoriated tungsten, even on aluminum. How & why do you do that? Everywhere I read how thoriated tungsten is not recommended for AC welding. I've tried it myself, seems  to weld fine until little "balls" form on the tip. Even with the balls, the arc still seems plenty controllable until the balls launch themselves into the puddle, contaminating it and freaking me out every time, it always makes me think I dipped my tungsten, even though I didn't.But you don't seem to have this problem, you're the exception to the rule from what I've seen. How do you avoid that?Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
Reply:Heat is kept to the minimum as the surrounding aluminum soaks it up rather quickly, and heat is concentrated using the TIG process. I have ordered new seals but looking at them they were relatively unaffected. Will change anyhow..There is also a bearing in there that I will change out as well. relatively cheap parts."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
