I'm going to make a 6 ft 3 pt box blade 2ft deep 18" tall I have some 1x 1 1/2" solid steel I want to make the ripper shanks out of. Will they hold up? do I need to heat treat them any info would be helpful. Thanks
Reply:I'd have to go out back and measure what's on mine. I'm thinking it's 1" x 2". The 1x1-1/2" may hold up fine if you're just digging in the dirt and not trying to rip up asphalt or rock. You'll probably want an abrasive resistant steel on the tip, or weld on some hardface. The mild steel will probably wear too fast. You might find some weld-on tips for a reasonable price.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I guess I should of told everyone the intended use is to level yard and rock drive way. I'm not sure if they are usually made from mild steel or what I don't want to go to the trouble to make then just bend them right away.

Reply:I already have the stuff laying around and I do welding as a hobby so I'm alway looking for projects.
Reply:the ripper shanks have seperate teeth on them which are hardened, just like a backhoe..you can buy a 6ft box blade at tractor supply pretty cheap compared to time and material your going to spendOf all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I think most people are trying to help but are getting off subject I'm not asking if it's cheaper or better to buy one just advice on making the shanks.
Reply:I built a 6' box blade for exactly the same thing - dressing almost 1000' of gravel drive and leveling dirt and it works fine. The ripping teeth are placed every 12" and are made out of leaf springs from a golf cart (1.5" wide x 0.25" thick ) - I used a torch to cut them and to punch a single hole to bolt them to the frame. If you can get some old leaf springs that is best - they will not get permanently bent as easily as mild steel and will wear longer. If you make the teeth too side they will make the tractor and frame work a lot harder. The cutting edge is 1/4" thick x 4" deep mild steel.I have been using the box blade for a few months and am not showing any signs of wear on the teeth or the blade. A lot of folks said that I should get a hardened cutting edge, but I have found that for the kind of work I do with it the mild steel is just fine. I expect to replace the blade in a few years - who cares though, I always have 1/4" steel laying around, not so much for hardened cutting edges.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:Thanks for the reply I already have some cutting edge laying around so not to worried about that. I will have to see if I can maybe find some leafspings.
