Reply:Condensed: Shorthoods are OLD, and copper-wound.  A lot more of the welder portion extends beyond the end of the shielding on the machine, hence the name.  May or may not have electric start.  Redfaces were made through the late '60's, and are also copper-wound.  Blackfaces may be copper-wound or aluminum-wound, and were made after the redfaces.  Sometimes people will switch their aluminum-wound welder's black faceplate with a red one, call it a redface, and try to get someone to fall for it and pay a little more.  So you can't go by the faceplate color if you're looking for copper-wound.  Not to mention the early blackfaces were copper-wound - I have one.What most people want is copper windings (they say they weld better), and any copper-wound SA 200 I've seen has a round generator barrel (not hex-shaped), and the lugs you attach your leads to are on the back face of the machine, not under the hinged side cover.  Note also that the "round" portion of the welder that extends out beyond the back face is NOT the generator - that's the exciter, and that's round on ALL of the machines.  To see the hex you have to raise the side cover and look at the big generator barrel.  Looking at a few pics on ebay should clear it up for you - as soon as you see the hex once, you'll know what to look for.Note that I personally am not making any claims about which one will weld better, I'm just explaining how to tell the difference between models, and how not to get fooled easily into thinking something is what it isn't.Last edited by tbone550; 07-31-2011 at 11:08 PM.
