Reply:I have the Horrid Fright cheapy black autodarkener. I have been fine with it UNTIL TONIGHT (however, I've done very little welding with it really). Anyway, I was playing with TIG a little tonight, and kept being blinded by bright flashes: never happened before tonight, but happened repeatedly. I figured it could be a low or dead battery... but I just went to the HF site and see that the helmet I have, of the 3 autodarkeners they sell, is the only one that says "not for TIG". I don't know why that would be. Never noticed it before...Has anyone else experienced or heard of periodic flashes with an autodarkening helmet? Is it a safe bet it means the helmet is crapping out? Any idea if it's just the bad battery, vs. a fried circuit?Miller XMT304 CC/CVBernard TIG coolerSSC foot pedal"It's a poor craftsman who blames his tewls toles TOOLS" (!^$#% keyboard)

Reply:I have the HF basic black, it only has delay fast or slow. It is fine for stick, but I could not tig with it either. It goes light like the sensors got blocked out but happened when I first started tig running flat beads. I wasn't aware it was "not for tig" either.Lately I have seen some hoods listed as "not for overhead welding" as well, which I never noticed before either.Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse. This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. It's been great so far.  Only complaint is it is kinda hard to get the outer lens cover off but it works great.  [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Rhino-LARGE-Darkening-Welding-Helmet/dp/B005PU3IE0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1359506685&sr=8-6&keywords=rhino+welding[/ame]

Reply:The sensitivity setting is primarily so that you can adjust for the ambient light around you and prevent "false triggering" of the darkening sensor. You can also adjust it to its most sensitive setting so that a "small" arc as in low current tig will be more likely to trigger the autodark lens. The delay setting has nothing to do with how fast it darkens, but rather sets the time delay before it lightens after the arc is stopped. I checked on the "not approved for overhead" after discovering that My Miller digital elite was not "approved" for overhead welding. What I found was that only the fiberglass helmets are approved for overhead.  The reason given was that hot metal can fall and melt through the "plastic"  helmets.I have been using a Miller Digital Elite for more than two years and do not have a reason to change. I especially like the X-Mode setting so that when I am welding outside, sunlight does not trigger the lens, but the arc does.Last edited by davido30093; 02-01-2013 at 06:14 PM.
