racticing on the subframe of a vehicle? Practice on scrap.Pics are not clear enough for me to comment - but before you weld on a car, you need to get good enough that you need no help.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Your beads all look tall and cold. Also those tiny individual welds with the gaps in between are places where cracks will start. You need to get rid of all the stop/starts, either by doing longer welds, or by making sure that the next weld burns into the previous weld properly. The means you either need more heat, or you need to feather the stop/starts with a grinder so the next weld can burn in better.I have no idea what parts on the car you are welding on right now, but I'd strongly recommend you stay away from anything critical at this point. Your weld skills aren't anywhere close to what is needed. What I'm seeing is fairly typical on a newer welder, especially one doing out of position welds. Welds on thin material out of position is tough, doing them in an awkward position like under a vehicle just makes it taht much harder. I'd recommend you get yourself plenty of material similar in thickness to what you need to weld on and start practicing. Flat and horizontal welds aren't that hard for most people to get down, but vertical and overhead welds aren't easy. Most new guys tend to run what I refer to as "timing" patterns. That seldom works in vertical or overhead. There you need to know how to see and read the puddle, and the only way to do that is to run lots and lots of beads. It helps greatly if you take a class and learn the basics, or have someone who is knowledgeable who can show you. In the end the only one who can do this is you, and there really isn't any "simple" way to do this..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. SW has it. But if you have to weld your car and these parts are just rust or hole repair and not critical weld them in hot, just on the edge of blowing threw, then grind it down flat and make it look nice.
