Reply:I looked closely at both a few years ago before I bought the Edwards 50 ton.  Both (and I am working from memory here) had good points.  I think the Uni had a unique punch system and the notcher on the front which means you can put it up against a wall and use everything easier.  One thing I didn't like about it was that it had a slug type angle shear.  I can't remember if it had a pivoting head or not but I believe it did.  I liked the Edwards because all stations have a straight downward pull.  I beleived the Edwards was the best buy for me at the time. Oh and I think the tooling for the Edwards was a little less expensive.

Reply:HVYHLR53Regardless of brand, most basic iron-workers share three functions, plate shear, punch and angle shear.Who will be the primary user, yourself or employees?You can't have 'your team' remodeling OSHA spec.equipment on a whim, but if you are the "master of your domain", consider this.My measure of a good machine is how creative you can be with the functions.The punch and angle shear are best used as is.The plate shear is the most flexible of the three, consequently I critique a machine by its expanded potential.It wants: a quick removable hold-down, a flat unobstructed platform [top and bottom] to accept clamps and welds, andbe easily removable for drilling.How the plate shear table/platform attaches is important,because you may want to install a larger table or build dedicated platforms.  OEM decks are usually poor.With respect to human factors, you can always build a raiser if the machine is too low, but some manufactureshave a large-low foot-print with the shear way inboard that will be hostile forever.Accessories, specific to your needs, are also a factor.Opus
Reply:I wouldnt buy either of those two. Instead, I would buy a used Geka, Peddinghaus, or Mubea. Much better built machines.I prefer Geka, have had mine for over ten years, and it rules. It has the best gaging and measuring setups, which save you lots of time and money.Mubeas and Peddis are built like tanks. I have seen 30 year old ones still used daily, while the ten year old, completely worn out Scotchman is pushed over to the side of the shop and covered with dust.American made, I like Pirannha the best. Scotchmans are easy to get parts for, and easy to resell, but not very durable. Uni-hydros are from the same family as Scotchmans- they are designed to be built easily, with minimum machinery in the factory- so, where the choice is to do it right, or do it cheap, the Germans go with right, the upper midwest goes with cheap.You get what you pay for. Especially with ironworkers.

Reply:right now on ebay there is a geka, and two mubeas in 40 to 50 ton hydraulic machines that are right in your target price range, and any of the three is about three times the machine that little scotchman is.If you are willing to go mechanical, rather than hydraulic, for six to eight grand you get an 80 to 100 ton machine, lots of older Buffalos, Peddinghaus and Mubeas out there- and they will outlast you and I by decades. I have a feeling that, after civilisation is gone, all that will remain is cockroaches and Buffalo Ironworkers.

I have a 45 ton Pirhana and while it is a great machine, once I had it for a couple of years I keep bumping into the upper limits on it. A little wider shear, and a little bigger hole in 1/2 and 3/4 plate would be nice
Reply:Thanks for everyone's input. I have been racking my brain for 2 weeks trying to figure out what to do. So far I'm leaning to the Edwards 40 Ton. For what I do it seems like it will be more then enough machine. I got all my quotes in with all the tooling I need @ $8000.The Pirannha was almost double the money and the Uni-Hydro doesn't look user friendly with the work stations.I talked to several dealers that sell multiple units and they all pointed me to the Edwards unless I wanted to spend big money.... almost double. I was able to speak to one of the reps at Edwards for all my questions, really nice people there.Jarrod W. Reply:I think you will be happy with the Edwards.  I looked at all of them for months and I can't say that price didn't figure into it because it did but when it came down to it I like the Edwards best for what I needed.  I do wish I had a bigger one but I don't "need" it.You must have figured in a lot of tooling or they have gone up a lot.    Let us know how it works.
