Well i picked up this little 6 ton press at harborfreight for $52.00 (used the 20% off coupon), the reason being is i wanted a small press to brake 90s or any degree. I didnt need a heavy duty press or brake just somthing smaller that can be stored in the corner when not in use. I can brake up to 8'' wide and thats about the biggest i can get with this little press. Well on to the build,Materials1'' round bar1 1/2''x 1 1/2'' x3/16'' angle8''x10'' 1/4'' plate1/2'' plate for the dieSome die springs and blots2 bushings turned on my lathe from 3/4' roundThe materialsThe pressThe Fitup/layout, tacking it into placeTacked upThe die all cleaned up. First i cut the angle with my powermax 30, then cleaned it up with the grinder, then did final touches with the belt sanderWhat a great alittle machineThe die bushings welded up. Note, that i only did small welds because i did not want to warp the die. Also these are just guides and theres not alot of pressure on them. The guide bars welded onYa gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:Springs on and all done. I was going to weld a small ring on top of the die for the bar on the press to slip into, but it will then sit too high and i will not be able to slide the jig in easyWorks great and just how i wanted it too. This was only 1/8'' plateThanks for looking!!Last edited by welderShane; 09-01-2011 at 09:21 PM.Ya gotta spend money to make money!

Reply:Go to a automotive machine shop and get some ford flathead valve springs they are the best. They will probably be free.V
Reply:I'm all for home made.  But one other option is a brake for your existing vise.  I have a 6" Grizzly one.  It's great for small jobs.  It could also work to adapt these pieces to a press like yours.  Nice, hardened steel. That said, I see that it now sells for $32, which is double what I paid for mine a year or so ago.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Great job on the press break.I would have used 2 angles to form a "W"so the metal would go into the center better.the inside of the angle will not allow a crisp 90 degree more of a rounded one.a little cut off blade action will fix that.Have funTom
Reply:Nice job, and very useful, I was always under the impression the included angle of the bottom V die needed to be a few degrees under 90* to allow for spring back, Is this correct or not?Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
Reply:Shane thats sweet! I liked the grizzly one two but Im just curious on how you ensure an straight bend on these. Is there some kind of side guide for them, especially the hand vice one.Miller Diversion 165Rage 2 Chop saw
Reply:How I set my bends is to measure from the edge to the blade of the break on each side.  This only works if you have a straight edge.  Another way is to mark a line with a sharpie and bring your blade down and line it up.Have funTom
