I have been enjoying this site very much. I seem to learn something new every day. I thought I would add some of my work. The first is a piece that is a table top sculpture that is 24" tall. Mild steel with a House of Kolor paint. The second is a start of a bigger set that will be 7' tall. I'll send those out for poweder coat as they will be for outside enjoyment.
Reply:Awesome!! What gauge is the 7' made from?
Reply:How did you make the "spheres"?XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:The sphere's look like rollers from a ball bearing?I love the look of the powder coating.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Thanks the big ones do look cool. A few people have seen them at the shop and they strike a pose and want their picture taken. The large ones are 3/16 x 10  HR. Bent on my small 20 ton shop press from HF. The heads are 10" hollow steel from a local ornamental supply company. They weren't cheap.Being new to California it has been a challenge to find my supply companys. Powder coat will come in a few weeks. I need to pick colors and find a helpfull overcoat company, and finalize the show location.
Reply:If you are in OC.  then Indstrial Metal Supply in Irvine is a one stop shop for you.  I know their burbank location has those steel balls through 10 " in stock... they can order other sizesTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I found Industrial Metal Supply pretty quick as they are just down the street from me. I purchase some things from them, But, wow their prices are a kick in the pants.I mostly go to Schorr Metal in Placentia. I got prices from Benner but they were pretty high too. The best price for the balls is always  Jansen but King had the 10" in stock. They are both pretty close to my shop. Thanks very much for the suggestion of IMS.Any powdercoat connections?
Reply:don't know of any powercoaters,  You should put your equipment in your signature.   What process did you use for them.   I see you ground it all smooth,  I think TIG welded and leave the stack of dimes too would look cool.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Awesome Sandy, thanks for posting! Beauty colors!I use hollow steel balls extensively( got about 300 in stock, in various sizes) I get mine from George Bezdan in Vancouver BC. If you want some price comparisons, post some examples an I can look it up. Don't know if it's worth the shipping but maybe they are cheaper. One thing I learned is that they get them from a couple different manufacturers. Usually you can tell by the ordering code which ones come from the same place.  Also, sometimes you can get a, for example, a 1 7/8" ball for $2 cheap per ball than a 2" ball because of the supplier. I got some 8" balls a couple years ago because they got some in cheap from a supplier. They were around $12/ball. I didn't need them at the time, but wasn't going to let them past at that price! So if you have some flexibility in your designs, a 1/8th of an inch can save you a mint!Let me know about the price compare if your interested.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I'm not really a fan of art, especially stuff called "abstract metal art".  To me, that stuff looks like somebody dumped out their scrap bucket and welded everything together as it landed.I do like what you've posted though.  Shows some real thought and quality work.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Thanks Bert PM sentBoostin..... Yup, I know what you are sayin. Thank you for your nice comment. I have to say reading over this forum I always enjoy your choice of words and how you phrase them. I grew up in NJ and spent a lot if time in NYC and saw a lot of art. Now here in California there is no comparison. Much more here. I too have a very specific taste for art and I don't care for some of it. I know a good piece when I see it. Some of my work is in the scrap pile.... I just didn't like it. I'm amazed at the money spent on art. Incredible amounts. Some pieces are well worth it. Some are piles of scrap put together as you have stated. Again thanks for your comments. I'll only post items I have sold as then at least I know that 1 other person liked it even if no one here would..... many people here know and can see all the labor it takes to work the metal.
