Reply:so based on the shaft on the bottom it spins or has something spin around it. It has large holes in the flanges. these could have two purposes, bolt something on solid like afformentioned impellor, or they could be use as pivot points for some sort of grapple device, or armeture. Is that a tapped fitting on the shaft in the "parts I welded" picture?I'm going to go with central pivot for an ammusement park ride. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:upon futher reveiw. the holes appear to be located in such a way that they would interfear with eachother if you put a bolt through them. You might get away with a pin, but I think a bolt is out, unless one side of the hole is tapped.two fittings per shaft. an "intake" and an "exhaust". say for a hydrolic piston. though based on the length of the shaft, it's a fairly short stroke, if thats what it is.Also, knowing that you have access to a VERY large Lathe, and because the original part shows no sign of "bearing wear". I wonder if the polished parts on the new shafts are due to spinning on said lathe, and not due to use of the mechanism.now, why two? Also the design of the base is different from the original, and both the original, and the new parts are fairly rough. The original appears to be a cast single piece. where as the new parts have some nicks and cust from grinders and such. so it isn't something that people are going to see regularly. it just needs to get the job done. not be pretty. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:A grapple would fit if the shaft is a hydrolic piston. but then, I doubt Zap would have to ask what it was if that were the case. A drill head wouldn't account for the fittings. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Replyid you make the head (and weld it to the large shaft)? I see machining marks for a steady rest close to the head? If so, how did you weld it? The base plate looks to be 1.25"+ thick, how many passed did that take ya?Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders

Reply:so out of curiousity, assuming a welder was an expert with tig and with stick, there should be no strength difference for a part like this done with multiple passes, right?  And another side quesiton.. Reply:So if I am understanding correctly, mild steel single vs multiple pass makes no difference for final weld strength, but higher strength alloy steels, single pass is stronger, and tig vs stick does not really matter?miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
