Project ideas for 55 gallon barrels

I have access to food grade 55 gallon barrels.  They are in perfect shape, coming from a food supplier, so they aren't dinged, rusty, etc.  Even better, they are only 5 bucks.  Anyway, does anyone have any project ideas, besides the typical BBQ grill? Thanks in advance.

Reply:I cut one into 3rds and made a compost bin.  Each section can be stacked so I can get more and more compost in it.  I've never actually needed more than 1 section yet though.A few other ideas:  firepit, planter box, yard roller - or weld on some prongs and have an aerator, rain barrel, some kind of bench or chair, and of course a BBQ/Smoker.  where are you located?Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:Grills and smokers come to mind 1st. I've also seen any number of wood fired heaters done using drums. Reply:We keep 2 in the shop. One has clean oil dry in it. The other had clean oil dry in it, then it got designated as the spit can(everyone in the shop dips or chews). The second one stinks. Bad. Especially in summer.Go Cards!!!!!

I was planning to do a fire pit as a gift for a friend out of mesh and some angle, sort of a truncated inverted pyramid, but this might be a cheaper solution..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Make a few compost spinners.  They will sell to the local tree huggers like hot cakes.  I built a few last year and couldnt make em fast enough.   All the parts are about 10 bucks and they sell easilly for 50-75 with no haggling at all.  Thats a pretty good return on your investment.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?

Reply:UDS  I'm selling them as fast as I can make them. I have access to an unlimited supply wife works at a bakery and soy bean oil comes in them. I have made at leat 15 this summer and each one is getting better with new ideals added to them. Attached Images

Reply:No pretty paint schemes just my ex trash can converted to a stand on rollers for my chop saw because I got tired of trying to find a place to use it.Now that I know it works I'll look for a better drum and might actually paint the next one.The smoker and the fire pit are both excellent projects for a drum Attached Images

Reply:I removed the bottom of one and stuck it together with a second, end-for-end, to make a storage container. These barrels use a clamping ring to hold the top on.

Lay it down on its side and you have a bench, turn it upside down and you have a barstool, cut it down and you have a step stool, turn the short one back over and you have an oil drain pan (for diesel guys). Reply:Here are some ideas. I have a 55 gal drum that i put behind my shop that i put small scrap in it . cut it in half make a plow for ATV. outside burn barrel for trash and card board .smoker,grill combo . if you enjoy hunting a bait barrel . make a yard roller and it could be used to compact the sand for patio paver. Also you could make a grate for the torch and all the slag and sparks go in the barrel.
