Here's an example of what I prefer 2 do. This one prob took 80+ hours. I don't even bother offering this stuff 4 sale,as I can rarely sell the LOW priced spike art. But i have fun doing it, and it cuts down on the psych. bill!  Attached Images

Reply:I've never seen that painting b4!! Amazing likeness, yakdung!!!
Reply:that looks like an illustration I saw with a H.P. Lovecraft storyso, do you just build up weld beads to make that?
Reply:Saw this at a tractor show. I know its not steel, but mother nature made it with some marbles. Attached ImagesLearning one rod at a time
Reply:When the time comes I'd also like to do some artistic work- just out of curiosity - what material/process etc. did you use ?

Reply:Gadzooks, Grumpy!  That's just awesomely, completely over the top!Contrary to popular opinion, I do NOT have a pet turkey that craps molten steel.  It's a goose.
Reply:vjecko, this particular piece is pounded stainless sheet and lots of drip by drip stainless tig welding.(sculpting by addition). And acourtjester, don't b too hard on yourself. Nobody starts @ the top. Top pic is my 1st turtle (1999). 2nd pic,2nd turtle (2001). I've done a 3rd sea turtle in 2010, but I can't find the pic BTW, is that skull aluminum? Attached Images

Reply:Absolutely fantastic.  I wish I had the hand and eye for art like that.  Unfortunately I never mastered staying in the lines with crayon so I have to depend on others for the real artwork like you have done.  Maybe if you added a couple of pics at a time and nobody would get there panties in a wad.  Great lookin sculpture man.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:Excellent work but, damn, that thing is seriously UGLY. I understand what you are saying about selling things. My son does metal art and is good at it. People can buy China made junk at Hobby Lobby for almost nothing so they won't pay a few  bucks more for local made art.
Reply:I checked out your album.   Amazing work!!  Do you build up and then shape it back down to what you want?"I'd rather be careful a hundred times as killed once"

Reply:Hey Cricket. That is really cool!!!! Sorry it took a bit. Didn't get to this forum section. Xmas business and what not!I know what you mean re: not being able to charge what a piece is worth. I get ideas but then don't build them for that reason. Funny though, other stuff I do I make great money on and they take no where near the time and thought. Go figure. I'm going to try and say "phuk-it" more and just build the stuff and throw the big ticket price on them. If they sell they sell. I've got a good gallery locally that sell lots of my work and I'm sure they'd show the $$$$$ stuff just to try. Did a half-skull a while back. It's on my site. I'll check out your other work! Thanks for posting! Reply:To bert & roadkill, I've just started working with a local gallery after a 5+ year sabbatical. I've continued with my day job as an automotive tool&die weldor. But i had an 18-24 month gap in the sculpting due to a serious eye condition (l.eye hemorhage), which has affected vision, depth perception, and confidence. Add 2 that no degree (esp. in the arts),and a moderate social handicap. So I do the easy thing, which is to tig up all this weird sh*t, and dream about rejection & lack of credentials/credibility. BTW, don't N.Y. galleries want artists with degrees, possibly from the "right" school? Not some 50 y.o. dirty retread weldor from the city America loves to despise.
Reply:Cool, cool work guys. Grumpy, the speed demon turtle is great.  I see you're from Detroit as well, hopefully we will cross paths some time!Throwing my 2 cents in, FWIW, about selling stuff.   People will pay for a piece that is unique and well presented.   You've got to be creative not only in the work, but also in making it available.  It's just not as simple as making something, and if it's cool it sells.   Social media has been a godsend for me, I do nearly 100% of my business on line.browndogwelding.com@welderassassinMy Blog on The Fabricatorfacebook.com/BrownDogWelding
