I live next to a really nice family with 15 year old twins. They are home schooled. Boy and girl.The twins are ultra smart and ULTRA courteious, It's prob the home school thing. No sideways hats and baggy pants if you catch my drift.Anyway they always see me hammer assing around the shop burning my fingers and cursing and such. So the father and son wander over one day and ask if I could fix a lawn chair for them. I agreed to look at it the following week only if the boy will help (Daniel).I send the boy home with the book from Home Depot called Welder's Handbook. I ask him to read the O/A chapter only.So he shows up today at the agreed upon time wearing appropriate attire and a shade 5 lens from ACE! He asks all the right questions including "are we violating the 1/7th rule?" Then after a few minutes he's layin beads on a coupon after I demonstrate one. ONE!Ok kid, game on, I wheel out the lincoln and have him set it up per the chart. I have only one helmet so I demonstrated it's use with no arc. I made buzzing sounds with my mouth.He puts on the helmet. He does exactly as told! He lays a lap MIG bead 8" long on 1/8" steel perfectly straight. It rivaled anything I can personally do. ON HIS FIRST TRY EVER.We then fix the chair. Took all of 5min. I know when I'm in the presence of a talented individual. Reply:Hey skywest,My kudos to you for your patience & willingness to introduce a promising youngster into the welding arena. Since my recent retirement, I have a neighbor youngster(13) that asked me to teach him welding. He's also very respectful & diciplined by caring parents. I told him I would love to help him learn & gave him a few books to read to get a basic understanding of the myriad of terminology associated with welding. Next week he will start coming over a couple times a week & I will, hopefully, induce some hunger to really learn. He's a great youngster & his parents encouraged him to take my offer. Reply:It seems like many of the home school kids are the most practical young people I've met. I've known some who've been able to practically support themselves with a craft by the time they're 15 if they had to. Pretty cool I think.
