Reply:Using 75/25 mix, miller dimesion 302. Still havin trouble! Have to make too big a weave to get it to lay down at 165 temp assuming that's 16.5v? Correct me if I'm wrong. Ipm?

Reply:Thanks doug! I'm using a tjoint 3/8, root is fine, post a pic of the machine on Monday! Adjusting the gas would that make a difference in getting bead to lay down any? Prolly not, huh! Problem is instructor isn't very familiar with mig, so I'm pretty much in the dark. Tired of playing with heat and wire. Thx!
Reply:Each machine runs a bit different. At the tech school I usually have to adjust the settings a bit depending on which machine the student is using to get it to run the way I like. (kid's beat the ever living pi$$ out of these.)The biggest issue I find most people have with vertical is they are not watching the puddle and reacting to it. Guys can get by fine on flat and horizontal running what I refer to as "timing patterns", but that seldom works well with vertical or overhead. To many watch the arc, not the puddle or simply can't see the puddle at all the way they are used to holding the gun. It will take a bit of time to look past the shiny light and learn to ignore it and see the molten steel instead. I usually find if I demonstrate an exagerated weave and have the student really try to watch the puddle they can get the idea a bit better. Then it's just making the same motions, but on a micro scale to run stringers and make sure the sides get tied in. Usually guys spend too much time in the center and not enough time on the sides because they are trying to do a timing pattern and are not watching the puddle. I hold on the side till the puddle catches up to the arc, then quickly move to the other side and pause briefly till the puddle catches up again before moving back to side one. All this motion is usually less than a 1/8" total, sometimes as little as a 1/16" depending on the joint configuration..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. ReplyQuick? Bout mig!SW, where do you teach? I am also from the north of Philly area. Actually just north of doylestown. OP I run about 220 on the wire speed at about 22.5 volts. I usually run my root pass with a slower wire speed at right around 200. It seems less prone to bellying out. When weaving, I always think to myself click-pause-click-pause and so on. The click part is when I'm going across the middle and pause is obviously when I get to the outside edge of my weld. Hope this helps.-marc
Reply:Marc, I help out at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology in Willow Grove. Reply:Got it. I'm not familiar with the school as we are serviced by upper bucks vo-tech, here in ottsville. It's good to know that someone on Welding Web is familiar with the area. I currently attend WTTI in Allentown. Thank you for responding.-Marc
Reply:I've got a bunch of guys I know and work with in the Ottsville/ Hilltown/ Perkasie area. Looks like Upper Bucks has evening classes also. I remember looking at places about 10-12 years back or so in that area just to see what was available. Good luck..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
