Lighting question

What do you suggest for lighting for my welding bench?   Task lighting? I am looking at a two bulb 4 foot T5HO fixture, around 100 watts of fluorescent power, so should put out a ton of light.   But I may need task lighting anyway. In the summer, I get enough natural light that I don't have to worry, but at 4 PM in the winter, the natural light is not much.I would also be doing some grinding. What do you use that you like?RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:The new T8 and T5 (newer and more efficient that T8) are great, but you may add one or more of the high bay metal halide if you really want la lot of light. You will sacrifice some efficiency, but you will have LIGHT.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I had not looked at the T5 bulbs.    However, this article suggests that the large cost premium for T5 vs T8 may not be justified for the small improvement in efficiency.  http://www.hoveyelectric.com/hovey-e...ed-T5-LightingThe T8 is smaller in diameter than the T12, while the T5 is even smaller. Thanks for the info, I did not know anything about T5 until you brought it up.Keep those ideas coming.  What about task lighting?RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:I use a T8 four bulb fixture and a halogen for task lighting over my bench. I made this swing arm and for the last couple of years it word great, it does however get warm, a side effect of these.
Reply:You could put a T8 four lamp fixture on the ceiling and one high on the wall and angled say 15-20 degrees.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Fluorescent lighting alone is not usually recommended around spinning type machinery in a noisy shop. Sometimes the rpm of the equipment can match the flicker of the fluorescent lights and give the appearance that it is not moving, kind of like a timing light. If your shop isn't particularly noisy it shouldn't be too much of a problem though.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller 252 Miller 250xMiller Syncrowave 250Miller AEAD200 LegendMiller 375 Xtreme plasmaLincoln WeldPak 100Victor O/A
Replyowes has some t12 and t8 fixtures for 12 bucks. lit my shop nicely, and they all take the same size bulb which is nice.  they even have electronic start for cold weather which is nice... my $0.02Lincoln Weldanpower AC/DCLincoln LN-25Miller WC-115a Miller Spoolmatic 30aCheck out my youtube TV Channel
Reply:I'm with 200mphbusa on the halogen. I have one mounted on a swing arm above table. Great in winter, gives off some heat too. Mine is a 500 watt.

Reply:I like 4-foot T5 fluorescent tubes with DAYLIGHT bulbs over benches and tools.  Then, I added a vintage dental light for task lighting.  You see both the fluorescent lights and the dental light in these pictures...You could also build a framework sticking out from the wall and use regular 'work lights' (the clamp lights with a big, aluminum reflectors).  I put the 27-watt CFL fluorescent bulbs in them.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:Machine Punk--wicked cool bracket, I'm assuming you fab'd that up, damn nice job!
Reply:Thanks.  Yes, that is my work--designed and built by me.  The curved shapes in that bracket are parabolas...which take their cue from the parabolic mirror in the dental light.  I build with aluminum and solid rivets, using the exact same techniques used to build aircraft.  I don't really want to hijack this thread, though...you can see a LOT more of my work at the thread in my signature.  Since most of my stuff is fastened with rivets, I don't post here a lot (but I do have an Oxy-Acetylene setup and I just finished a 4-day Mastering the Torch course.)KevLast edited by Machine_Punk; 11-27-2013 at 12:37 AM.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:That dental light creeps me out.  I wouldn't get much work done with that thing above me.  I don't like the dentist.  Amazing mount though, incredible!! Good work!Lincoln Weldanpower AC/DCLincoln LN-25Miller WC-115a Miller Spoolmatic 30aCheck out my youtube TV Channel
Reply:To the OP...I am sorry...I did not mean to sidetrack this thread.PLOWBOY:  See, I thought the exact opposite.  While I was a kid, going in for routine dental checkups, all I could do is look at that light and go, "Man, I gotta have one of those some day."  But I've only had two cavities filled in my life, so I probably have a different view of the dentist than most.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
