Tig welding SS Exhaust

Hi,I'm putting together a SS exhaust for a customer. Not getting the best results that im looking for.I'm using .065 wall 304 SS. 3" diameter.Using a syncrowave 250.Any recomendations for tungsten, amp settings, argon flow rate, tig rod diameter.I feel like i need to use low amperage prob around 50 amp, to keep the SS metal at the correct temp. When i introduce 1/16" filler rod it seems to cool the molten puddle.Thinkin about getting and trying a smaller tig rod.Thank You,Doug Fab

Reply:i use the miller site alot. im mainly concerned about the filler rod thickness. becausecus they say 1/16 but i think i should use smaller filler. im gonna buy some and try it anyways.thanx for your help
Reply:When I was welding a lot of exhaust, same stuff, .065 304 tubing, I would use 1/16" tungsten (2% thoriated), and .045 308L filler rod. I'd set my machine at about 60 amps and use my pedal to adjust the heat. With a good fit up, you could almost fuse the whole weld with no filler. Hope that helps, I'm a Doug also!
Reply:thanx dougyea i can def fuse it together but thinkin i should put a little filler in and make a nice roll of dime bead.would u rec the 308 or should i do 316?im gonna backpurge also. did u need to backpurge?

Reply:Well one trick for ss is to go hot and fast apposed to slow and cold. 316l filler rod is the most forgiving, and best flowing. Are you using a gas lens? A back purge is a very good idea and should be done. 1/16'' is perfect if you go hot and fast leaves a good deposition that cools the weld down as well but if you like cold and slow get some .045 filler. Also the most overlooked thing in tig welding is tungsten prep and the better its prepped the better the weld and puddle. I would give the tungsten a good 2 diameter taper with a .020 land and make sure the grinds are longitudinal. Take you time on the grinding dont press hard and turn fast slow and steady will win the race. good luckmiller xmt 304 w/ 22a feederdynasty 200dx tig runnerspeedglas 9100xvictor journeymen O/Aesab shadow 5000 shape cutterClausing Drill Press setAVIA d.r.o. milling machine ercolina ercobender 76baileigh hsp-66mJD2 notchmaster

Reply:which way should i face the tip of the tungsten while grinding? i have seem people do it diff.
Reply:When i grind i go point up with my hands rested on the tool rest (make sure that you always keep a finger in the same spot while grinding so it stays even when if you cool it in water) . Some people like to go point down and hold it from above but its very easy to grind unevenly so i would not advise it. I can take a couple pictures of one tomorrow if you'd like just for clarification just let me know.miller xmt 304 w/ 22a feederdynasty 200dx tig runnerspeedglas 9100xvictor journeymen O/Aesab shadow 5000 shape cutterClausing Drill Press setAVIA d.r.o. milling machine ercolina ercobender 76baileigh hsp-66mJD2 notchmaster
Reply:I'd also add that exhaust work, depending on the configuration, is an area where the use of Solar Flux B can be quite useful. Some exhaust systems are difficult to achieve a proper purge with.I prefer .045 (vs 1/16") filler for doing thinwall tubing. Thinwall SS is an area where the use of pulse can really be beneficial. It was the main reason I installed the pulser option on my Syncrowave 250.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:If you want the dimes but don't want to use filler (if fitup is good) you can make small circles with the torch. Without filler 40-50 amps is good, with filler 45-55 is usually good on .065".
Reply:thank you all for the advise.that is how i have been grinding the tungsten, so i should be good with that.time to get welding.
