Rusty 1/4 steel plate. Using a 6011 rod . Welds look bad. Suggestions appreciated.Grinding and wire brushing still leave pits in the steel.  Thanks,Ken
Reply:If you're trying to weld through grit, rust, paint, grime, dirt etc. 6010 is your friend. Welds look like crap unless you have used it A LOT and can make them look pretty but if you aren't prepping 6010 is as good as it gets. If you prep well even little pits are ok use 7018.1973 Lincoln SA 200, Already replaced shunt coils, Idle board (SOLD)1984 Miller Dialarc 250HF, Miller water cooler, 250 AMP water cooled torch, you know the worx.
Replyost up picts of your welds and give us the settings rod size etc.6011 is the AC/DC version of 6010, so that should work. Those rods don't produce the nice rippled welds others like 7018 6013 do, so what you see might just be "normal".No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Clean the metal before welding, not only will it look better but it will be a strong weld. Making a good weld is 75 percent prep and 25 percent welding.
Reply:6010 DC, 6011 AC. They are a fast freeze rod which means as you remove rod from puddle, it starts to cool. As stated it's a little more difficult to get smooth welds with. Experience helps. Post a pic as mentioned by DSW. 6010/11  1/8'' rods would be around 85 amps for a starting point. Heat settings may vary on machines. Here's some info. http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...calculator.php
Reply:A couple dirty repair jobs I've had to do had no room for a wire wheel nor brush. I clean as best as possible with a chipping hammer or chisel. Using Lincoln 6011 1/8" set a 90 amps gets the job done.Miller trailblazer 251Miller Spectrum 625Millermatic 2511970 Lincoln SA-20010lb sledge hammer
Reply:base weld with a 6011 chip it and cap it with a 7018.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:6010 for me. I ain't cleaning or grinding every weld on a pipe fence to weld it. It's just not worth it. The welds still look fine. Then you have to weld the galvanized panels to the rusted pipe. Still works fine.
Reply:You know Bob, you make a clear point.  I was thinking "what application would you not just want to grind the rust off of" ... and bam, you give a "picture is worth a 1000 words" example and nail the point.  Nobody would want to try and remove the rust off of every connection point on that fence.
Reply:6010 will be your best friend.....
Reply:Another vote for 6010.

Reply:Before you put the wire up run down the inside of the pipe with a grinder lightly.  It will help.  You don't have to make it all shiny one pass over with the grinder and it gets easier two passes and better still.  Might even use a Tigerpaw. The wire only touches the pipe in a very narrow line. .  Easier to start arc too.Lincoln MK 250, Syncrowayve 351, Cutmaster 151, SA 250D, bobcat 225  and want more.4 Daughters, 6 cats, 1 dog, 1 wife and don't want anymore.
Reply:Thanks for all the input. 6010 is better with welder set at 80 DC 1/8 rod.Miller AEAD 200 LE, Dialarc 250, Lincoln 180 Mig Ken N
