Hi I am an automotive mechanic student  and I do welding on mostly cars.  I started out with a 70amp arc welder from harbor freight. I used to do some torch at my dads shop when I was a kid. when I started doing cars myself I found a direct need for the ability as far as economy and convenience. I noticed some problems with the arc style right off the bat. some things were too much flux build up, hard starting and general bad functionality. I was tired of the poor work quality so I moved up to a better machine. I recently bought a mig 135 dc output, has all the desired features of the pricey machines and my flux core welds are looking a lot better than the other machine. I was rebuilding a set of vw heads today for my own car and noticed a patch work I did on one of the exhaust studs with jb weld that I could fix now that I have a mig welder. I was reading the tig would be better for delicate work but I dont know if you would classify it as delicate since its about a 1\4 in hole I need to patch on the exhaust stud boss. I was thinking a 20cf argon tank from harbor freight would be sufficiant. I plan on doing mostly flux core when i dont need gas. the heads are aluminum I would not be worried but the studs do hold up the exhaust and I would hate to crack it. does anyone have any experience welding with a mig on aluminum for mild work like this. I would hate to go out and buy a tanks for no reason. the youtube videos make it look easy but I dont know what to expect. thanks any help would be appreciated.
Reply:Welcome.Did you ask a specific question? Are you trying to weld a hole in an aluminum head that was previously "fixed" with JB Weld?Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Yes I can post a pic if it would help assess it better. my main concern is the power output. I would hate to blow a hole threw and ruin the hole boss. thanks.
Reply:Always post clear pics - from your written description I'd say not a chance. But who knows once a pic is shown.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I just went and dremeled out the old jb patch here is a zoomed in pic. these are a set of dual port  1600 heads.
Reply:And here is a little broader one also the welder has infinite voltage and wire so adjustments should not be a concern.
Reply:Can you helicoil the hole? If it's just one repair you might pay to have it done. Some vw's were magnesium. If you want to learn how that's a different story.

Reply:Money is definitely an issue right now with school and my car. I am not a welder by trade so I prob will not be getting a tig machine. I wanted a machine that can do general welding.  My only concern is the lack of experience.  I think a tig torrch would have problem filling the hole since it uses a torch action and filler.I guess I will find out when I can get some gas. Does anyone know a good flow rate using pure argon.
Reply:I saw the pics after my reply. Helicoil is probably not an option yet, although it might be after there is a little more metal.
Reply:I would suggest to get this job done by a pro.If your MIG machine has only a 135A output, chances are you will not be able to get into spray transfer mode to efficiently weld aluminum. I never tried, but everything I read on the subject (I will probably give it a try soon) states that you need a fair BIG MIG machine to do aluminum. Spoolgun compatible is even better, otherwise you will have issues feeding the wire because it will birdnest inside the MIG, right after the drive rollers. Also, if your MIG is one of the simplest ones, probably you will not be able to change the liner for a teflon coated one, which makes it even harder to feed the wire.If your budget is tight, I don't think you will be able to afford an AC/DC TIG of any kind. The cheapest ones you may find are old transformer machines which, in turn, require big amps in 1ph to run or a 3ph service. Even if you got a machine, you will need to learn how to use it first. For all I have stated above, I think that right now you are better off paying someone else to do it.
Reply:Rent a Tig. 4943 filler.Or pay a professional his or her minimum charge. Specify 4943 or 357  fiillers. I carry both. However you better remove all of that JB weld first. Nothing pisses off a pro more than that. You dress the weld and reinstall the stud.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:If your near a scrap yard get another head for a few bucks and grind the valves at school.
