Alright guys I know this isn't welding but  yall should know it with all your rigs with replacement bumpers.  I'm buying a new replacement bumper that comes powder coated black and they won't sell them bare steal. I'm not paying someone to remove the powder coat. How can I do it myself with out waiting a ton of time? I'm planning to powder coat it white. And I'm not going to paint over black powder coat because it doesn't last. I want to do complete removal and re application. Thanks
Reply:I would think you could have it sand blasted or soda blasted then reapply a white powder coat,...but then I read you don't wanna pay for someone to remove it. Reply:I checked on that and they said it would be 6 to 8 hundred dollars to have it removed cause its so hard to take off. It's rediculous.

Reply:I had my last ranchhand painted over and it started chipping off when it would get hit with the tiniest peebles? And on white over black it would show through so easy I'm scared to go that route

Reply:Make a paste of caustic soda and smear it on with a natural bristle brush keeping it wet. It will crack it. Not quite as fast as methylene cloride but you're not running production. Then wash it clean. ReplyAlright guys. Powder coating removal help!!!aint stripper or a torch, or sandblast will work fine, though the torch is a bit of a smoky mess. Why dont you post a pic of the bumper and have one of us fab guys build it for you?
Reply:I saw a ornamental iron fence get rejected by the inspector at a school.   Reason why, the 1.5" sq. tube had sat in a pile to long before it got used, and all the tubes had rust on at least one or two sides from water.    It was a nightmare.   There were about 60 panels that got powder coated over the pitted rails.    The way they removed the powder coating, was a grinder, w/ one of those rubber back pads that you attach a sanding like paper to.   Kinda like a DA sander a body man would use.    Most welding supply places sell it.   The sanding  paper has a plastic like corkscrew thing on the back, and it threads into the center of the rubber backing pad. Theres different grits.

Reply:The powdercoater here uses a pearburner torch to burn it good, then he sand blasts it.
Reply:where gloves and eye protection methelelthelcloride  i have never seen any paint stand up to it out side only straight wax stripper (caustic soda) you can try
Reply:Either let the next powdercoater paint over it or find another bumper not already painted.
Reply:In teaching myself powdercoating, I had a few inevitable ...setbacks... My former PC guy (still use him for anything that won't fit in my oven...) showed me a product called Captain Lee's Spra' strip, works like magic! Buy it in the gallon size and use a squirt bottle. Spray it on, wait 5-10 min and wipe off, repeat if required (very rare occurance).Not the cheapest to buy upfront, but definately is in the end. Amazing stuff!!
Reply:I agree with Wagin. My boss owns a powder coating business. Standard procedure is sandblast, primer and paint. All steps are included in the price. Is say to do a number complete with a standard color would run no more than $275. Reply:Sandblasting yourself would take to long if you want to remove it take a torch to it them wire brush it with a cupped wheel. Because it is a thick and rubbery consistency it takes time to sandblast, I did my truck brush guard and roll bar by Sandblasting, them repainted with 37% zinc epoxy then polyester polyurethane topcoat. Original powder coat lasted less than 2 years repaint was 25 years ago and it still had not rusted. Recently built a 30 inch bandsaw and did it the same way. Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
Reply:There's some nasty chemical removal stuff referred to as B17.  It'll remove powder... and your skin if you aren't careful.From orbit on my Android.

Reply:Torching it will turn it white ,and will burn some of it off,but the fumes will sicken you.  Not an easy removal . Powdercoat  is  not the answer for rust on the east coat, get a scratch or crack in it,(usually from dings/or bends) and see how fast it rusts underneath.
Reply:I have used zip strip and it worked. Might take several applications but it did the job. I've sandblasted it also but it is time consuming I'd rather strip it first and finish cleaning it up with the sandblaster.
