Convert my machine from GMAW to SMAW and back again

My only welding power source is the Lincoln 135 amp welder and that is what I used.I had an application/experiment for hard facing with 1/8'' medium hard facing rods. I wanted to hard face tip a few punches, the edges of a few chisels, pry bars edges and repair several oblong trailer spring mounting holes.So I bought a stick handle and rigged up an unknown cable, appeared to be between 8ga and 6ga, total of about 4 feet of cable, a little undersized I know.And it kind of worked. I retipped sever warn down punches, built up the edges of chipped and worn pry bars and repaired spring bolt holes. I ground the welds and a few quick tests I found I was unable to break or mushroom the new metal. Grinding the new steel down I could tell it was much more wear resistant.As you can imagine my mig rig was useless for SMAW layering, seemed very under powered.How many amps do you typically want to run through a 1/8'' hard facing rod?Would it have worked better with a heavier conductor?old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Whee are you located?I have some .045 dual shield Lincoln Hardfacing wire you can use. You could wind a small spool of it for free. I'll never use it all in my lifetime. Reply:Hunt down a used transformer stick welder for heavier work if you want an easier life.
Reply:I would look for a used 220v machine for burning larger wire, you can also find used SMAW welders very cheaply if you watch craigslist, the old lincoln tombstone AC/DC boxes come up at garage sales all the time and often go for about their scrap value. Get an older one if you can with copper transformer windings. The newer ones have aluminum windings and are a lot lighter and not as well built. An easy way to tell is to try and pick it up, if you think you'll get a hernia its probably copper, if its not too bad its aluminum. School auctions are also a great place, I know a guy who bought a lot of 20 big Lincoln DC boxes for a grand total of $150.

Reply:You are at a disadvantage as far as supply and demand out there. My rule of thumb here is $75-$150 for an AC "buzz box" and maybe $150 - $250. for an AC/DC version, depending on brand, condition and various percs thrown in.
