Cheater lens

As I read here and then practice I am trying to watch the weld pool but I think I now need to invest in a better auto dark hood. Is a cheater lens intended for vision correction or is it a magnifier lens? I am having to remove my regular glasses to weld. I need them to drive but not for reading.I am willing to spend up to around $200 for a hood, I wont wear it everyday but want to buy American if that's possible. Appreciate suggestions.Thank you all.
Reply:Go to Wal-Mart or the Dollar store. Try on different reading glasses, hold up something with small print 12“ to 18“ away from your face. When you can read clearly, buy those glasses. Reply:Are your regular glasses for trouble seeing close or far away? If you have an astigmatism like I do. Don't use the glasses while welding because this can give you double vision and can strain your eyes. Now if you cant see close to you such as the weld puddle you might can throw the glasses down and slap a magnified cheaters lens in for just a couple bucks. Don't go buy a new welding hood yet until you have tried it with a cheater lens and no glasses. You can get a $45 pipeliner hood. Throw an $80 auto dark lens in there with a cheap cheater and your ready to roll without any glasses underneath.Last edited by AndrewDavenport89; 04-27-2015 at 05:05 PM.

Reply:I wear bifocals to read. When I weld I wear the big Sally Jessy Raphaël Walmart readers, plus my cheater lens. I have to or bird **** welds are the result.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Young people with perfect vision or corrected vision use light efficiently. To focus close the muscles surrounding the eye squeeze the eye to focus. Old people waste some light, so they need more. The pupils dilate letting in more light, but exaggerating any out of focus. Imagine looking at a dot. In focus it appears as a pinpoint dot. Out of focus, it appears as a much larger blur. If your pupil opens that blur becomes much larger. Magnifiers help by bringing that dot into focus, as our eyes no longer have the tight muscles surrounding them, they can't squeeze to focus. I use 1.00 magnifiers for close up. In a welding helmet I want them, plus a cheater lens in the helmet of the same diopter.Without, I once made a nice vertical up 7018 butt weld 1/2" to the right of the joint.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. Reply:My hood came with my Montgomery Wards buzzbox back in 1983 if I remember right. Awful flimsy. I would like a larger lens area as well. So a new one is really needed. I don't need glasses to read with.

Reply:I wear contact lens for driving work etc. But when it comes to reading welding and fine bodywork I need to use a 2.5 cheater safety glasses under the hood but like anything you get use to it. Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
Reply:the vcheater lens helps when you have problems reading the newspaper up close.     whichever that is caled near or far sighted, i get them mixed up.
