Q: How do you know when yogurt has gone bad? A: All yogurt has gone bad!OK not very funny. Seriously, how do you know if rod is past its prime. I've seen that celulosic flux should have some moisture, while low hydrogen should not. I believe7018 should be stored in a rod oven, 6010 should not. Like some of the other people on the forum wanting to plug their dialarc into the bathroom hair dryer outlet, I am cheap! A rod oven costs a lot of money, takes up space, and uses a lot of electricity. It occurs to me my domestic water heater is hot all the time. A box fabricated to sit on the top of it, well insulated, would take advantage of an energy source otherwise wasted. How would I gauge how well it works? Would it be suitable for all types of electrode, or just one? In my case, relative humidity in the room is never above 45%. Raising temperature to say 88 F from 70 F would reduce relative humidity by half. Is that enough, or a waste of time?Other ideas include a sealable container suitable to put in the oven, once hot enough and water is driven off, remove it and seal it. It occurs to me that doing it in the wrong order might create a potential bomb.Does anyone have any thoughts?
Reply:Short answer. If you aren't doing code work don't worry about a rod oven.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:Squirmy nailed it, but if you are still in the market for one, lenco makes a nice ten pound portable one. I got mine for 120bux. Pre set thermostat at 300*. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Man, that MIKEY has everything !                        I don't have one but IF MIKEY has it you know it's good .  We have the KEEN ones in the shop, https://www.rodovens.com/models/port...lding-oven.htm
Reply:If you build your own box, put a BBQ thermometer on it so you know what the internal temp is. http://www.amazon.com/SMOKER-GRILL-T...er+for+bbq+pitI keep them in a sealed plastic container and use CEP's method if I have trouble getting an arc started.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I built on out of a old microwave with a light bulb for the heat. I built it to keep my dual shield wire dry. just an idea, it was cheap and works good (for what I need).Esab 253 mig welderHobart 210 mvp w/ C25 gasmiller 225 a/c stick welderO/A torchHF 40 amp plasma cutter

Reply:My neighbor used to keep his AC rods on top of his House/hot water boiler.I store all of my AC/DC rod/consumables in the Utility room(furnace/hot water tank heat) in the plastic sealable rod containers with Silica gel packs.I do not do "Code" work so the only time 7018 gets the moisture driven out of it is if the steel is a high enough grade that I feel the need to mitigate Hydrogen issues.
Reply:The young one finally splurged and bought one of those 12" plastic bag sealers on sale + coupon at Northern Tool.  Sealed up a bunch of rods in small handfuls.  Pretty slick."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

I give $40 for it and I threw my little dorm fridge away. She's still humming away under my table full of rods.
Reply:But if you not welding a nuclear rocket, you Don't need a rod oven....~John
Reply:I would just buy sealed containers of rod break them down to put them in really big ziplock baggies by the pound or 2 and a few pounds in some little plastic rod holders then put it all in 40mm ammo cans.Add some fresh silica gel packs too.
Reply:I use the plastic cans and use rice it sucks the moisture out .Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
